Precision of Israeli strike
While not wanting to get into a debate over the rights and wrongs of latest Israeli action against Ahmed al-Jabari, couldn't help but notice how precise the strike was.
In the you tube video (before it was taken down) the missile hit the car exactly at a T junction between two streets. Damage was confined purely to the passenger capsule of the car. Presumably some sort of very small warhead - what might the IDF have used? Certainly wasn't a Hellfire. Looking like it's going to be a very ugly few weeks in Gaza and surrounding areas... |
"Damage was confined purely to the passenger capsule of the car."
Not from the photos I saw of the wreck. It blew the whole damn car to pieces including the chassis, one arm of which was sticking out at an angle. Still precise but damage not how you describe. |

Note that the front third of the car is relatively intact. Possibly due to the firewall containing the blast. Anyway - quibbling aside - it was a very precise strike... http://www.calgaryherald.com/7547177.bin |
OK, the photos I saw were when the car was still in flames
and none showed the front of the car. |
His body was in considerably worse shape than the car...

Looking at how the arse end has peeled open,
it shows at which end it hit plus as you say, the firewall could have contained it. But agree, to take out a car by itself without too much collateral damage is good going. . |
But who tipped off the IDF and Mossad, where he was going, when and at what time. Not the sort of job where you accept promotion unless you want a very short lifespan or live a life indoors in a bunker. I suspect Hamas have got the electrodes and black and decker out or waiting for someone, just a good excuse for some internal bloodletting.
Could this have been a kinetic kill weapon with a solid warhead or at least a small explosive package, and the fuel tank just blew. There appears to be very little collateral damage, there is no obvious damage to buildings and the palm trees appear intact. Damm good targeting though.:E |
It did say in the media that the Israelis had been tracking him for months.
My initial suspicion was that that was a smoke screen. I supposed if they had planned to do a strike like this they would have made sure they knew who was where. |
makes me wonder if:
*they had some sort of beacon planted in the car or invisible marking agent on the roof which allowed a missile lock. I would have thought it would be next to impossible to effectively lase/paint a moving target like that in such a dense urban environment. *if it may in fact have been a small bomb planted inside the vehicle itself The degree of containment of the blast seems curious if it was a missile strike - even just a kinetic solid warhead. I note they have developed some very small missiles ground to ground, and that the US has tested similar air to ground weapons capable of being fielded on the AH64. |

Laser designators ? Either by ground based persons or from the plane itself. The Israelis did say that it was an F 16 that did it. Re type of bomb / missile, in the Libyan conflict did you see the tank they took out with a missile ? may have been a hell fire ?. It was in a side street, between two garden walls. Amazingly not much else was touched except the tank. |
I hadn't seen that it was an F16... just assumed it was an Apache.
That says a lot for their ability to laser designate moving targets in built up areas then. Official IAF photo of one of the jets below: http://www.iaf.org.il/Sip_Storage/FILES/4/57644.jpg He was driving reasonably quickly in a narrowish street. ‫ No - didn't see incident referred to above. I'd always thought a Hellfire left a very big smoking hole in the ground... hence wondering if it was some new micro warhead thing... |
Here is the video. I think it might have been Brimstone, not a Hellfire.

Just a little scratch.
It will buff right out. |
Nah, they're just nicking the bonnet, so's they can flog it off to 'Abdul's Kia Spares & Dry Cleaners'
You didn't see nuffink, right? We weren't 'ere. . |
Didn't know Hamas had an office in Liverpool...:}:ouch::suspect:

I'm not sure if Israel has them, but this looks like the work of GBU-44 Viper Strike to me

Probably tipped with this. Apparently tungsten powder can give you a bit of a rash if you are at the wrong end of one of these.

Footage of the strike is still available...
