L39 crash in South Africa today 30th June

During an Airshow, the Italian Pilot sadly did not survive :(

There is a clip out there of it's final moment, but sorry I won't be posting a link.

An Italian national was identified as the pilot who was killed when the L-39 he was flying at the Klerksdorp Air Show crashed on Saturday, North West police said.

"Two planes were flying parallel to each other when Gian Franco Cigione, 49, lost control and crashed into the ground," said Captain Amanda Funani.

She said the planes were showcasing flying acts close to the ground when Cigione crashed.

His plane crashed next to the Klerksdorp cemetery and burst into flames.

Nobody else was injured in the accident.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.-Sapa

You might just as well have done as it only took 30secs to find it, and it's quite revealing as well, it should produce hours of endless speculation. :(

As you say the Italian Pilot sadly did not survive

Sad day. It was the L-39 registered as ZU-HIT. She and her sister ship (then registered as ZU-RUN exported to the UK from SA in 2008) had a complete overhaul of frame and avionics in 2005 (if I remember correctly). The overhaul took almost a full year to complete. She was a good looking plane and when I saw her last (earlier this year at the Rand airport airshow) she looked in great condition. Hope investigators can find and gather enough information to come to a firm conclusion.

Condolences to the family and friends.

R.I.P. Mr Cigione

The video is quite informative, and worth watching for anyone involved in that kind of flying.

Sad news, of course, and hard for those personally involved.
