Rare Sighting
 

Yesterday afternoon, Monday 28th, lateish, heard a non-standard engine overhead.

Nipped outside to see what I thought at first was a Sopwith Camel, but after a few seconds, turned out be the three winged, Sopwith Triplane. Heading west south west from overhead south Farnham, beneath the approach and departure routes out of Farnborough, as well as the Wokka circuits from Odiham.

Never seen one in the flesh, anyone know anything more about this exotic WWI marvel??

Possibly the Great War Display Team? They have a replica Sopwith Triplane, and a scan of their website (here) suggests that the Tripehound )and a Fokker DR1 will be in the vicinity of Odiham on 1 June.

There was a P47 over our village yesterday, the razorback from Duxford, wonderfull site and sound.:)

I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy Sopwith many years ago. He would have been about 90 at the time and old though his body was his memory was still good. He explained at length about the design problems he had with his Triplane and all of the solutions. He finally ended by saying "then the bloody Germans copied it"

You have to think outside the box fella- The Pilot could've been a Glasgow Rangers Supporter. :)

Didn't Sopwith's get bankrupted and then their then Chief Designer (Harry Hawker) took over the Company in his own name...?
Therefore the Company might rightfully clam to have had major fighter designs in BOTH World Wars??
And the Harrier/Sea Harrier in the Falklands.....
