U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter aircraft of the 4th Fighter Wing perform an "Elephant Walk" as they taxi down the runway during a Turkey Shoot training mission on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., April 16, 2012. The wing generated nearly 70 aircraft to destroy more than 1,000 targets on bombing ranges across the state to commemorate the 4th's victory over the Luftwaffe April 16, 1945. The aircrews are assigned to the 4th Fighter Wing's 333rd, 334th, 335th, and 336th Fighter Squadrons. (U.S. Air Force Photo by Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Rissmiller)

'Formation check-in' must take a long time!

typerated 24th Apr 2012 08:04

Just crying out for someone to rock up with a couple of pods of JP 233!

Pitts2112 24th Apr 2012 11:56

That's one hell of a formation takeoff!

"Roger, Eagle , stud 2, go"

"Eagle Lead"
"Eagle 2"....

"Eagle, Tower, we have a request for you to chop the formation back to company"
"Eagle Lead, F#ck Off"

Good to learn who it was that beat the Luftwaffe.

April 16, 1945: The Allied air force announces that future operations over Germany will focus on cleanup rather than strategic targets, effectively ending the air war

Queues at McDonalds drive thru's are getting out of hand.

F-15s for a Turkey shoot? Wouldn't a twelve bore be more effective and less damaging?

Interesting - presumably SDBs on multiple ejector racks. Does anyone know for sure?

Reminds of the twice-daily launch when Lakenheath Wing bolt-holed to RAF Honington. Sad contrast with Marham's bolt-hole a few months later which, apart from the odd singleton Tornado in the circuit, went largely unnoticed.

Having been on the 334th a few years ago (as a tame Brit) they were very proud of their heritage as an Eagle Squadron in WW11 and even wore the RAF 71 Squadron patch with pride.

Much as it annoys me with the modern RAF, when asked why they did it the answer is: "because we can!". When I was there we had more F15Es on the base than 11Gp had aircraft plus a tanker wing.

Squirrel, they probably chucked a few concrete 2000lb GBUs at Navy Dare too, again because they can! It really sucks and puts UK power projection in perspective.

hval 25th Apr 2012 17:07

Cyrilranch,

Think of how a herd of elephants walk; close together, bunched up; and slow

cyrilranch 25th Apr 2012 19:16

If Camerloon keeps cutting aircraft, this picture will show more air assets than HM Govt can deploy from whatever service .

I'd like to see the inadvertent IMC penetration plan after take-off...
