Catamaran Aircraft Carrier.

Just watched a TV program on the wave piercing catamaran ships, some of which have been delivers to the US Navy.

Would the catamaran concept be viable foran aircraft carrier of the future. Advantages I can see would be almost unlimited width, very stable and high speed.

Ahh but how long before some thrusting driver tries to get the country's remaining jet through the gap between the floats :E

That would be a worrying sight in the Straights of Taiwan.

Imagine the stress on the superstructure between the two hulls in heavy swells? Personally, I'd stick with the pykrete carrier myself...

Rigga 30th Jul 2011 14:53

Hmmm...

Didn't Captain Scarlet have one like that?

Trimaran

Trimarans are the way to go. So many advantages over mono hull and catamarans.

RV Triton is an example. Click on the link for some additional, basic data.

No angled deck though... thought the Chinese copied everything..

Bevo 30th Jul 2011 17:13

Interesting design - similar to what my 14 year old son drew recently. And here is a movie of the latest Chinese battleship.

Looking at the size of that thing the ChiComs won't need to make an amphibious assault on Taiwan. They just need to park the boat across the straights with a ramp for tanks at either end.

Clockwork Mouse 30th Jul 2011 18:10

No angled deck? Why would it need one? It has TWO parallel runways!

Re 2nd picture top right

Carrier heads into wind to launch the FJ's and the poor old helo's lift off from the back in sheltered conditions and into an instant tailwind, bit of a design flaw there!

Siggie

It looks like the Cat has 4 launchers, 2 facing each way.

In picture 3, the Blue Herc looks like the wing is going to collect
the nose of the jets.

Not a Herc... a Chinese A-50 Mainstay clone.

Some years ago, circa 1980, Incat, the wave piercing catamaran builder, proposed a carrier based on their technology. Created mild interest only but that is very symptomatic of Australia. There is no interest in anything unless it has been designed overseas. :ugh:

FoxtrotAlpha18 31st Jul 2011 04:56

Don't be so sure Plovett. There is considerable interest from Defence in buying 2-3 wave piercing amphibs from Incat or Austal. :ok:

Looks like a big target.
