RIAT 2011 Participation List
Just had a quick look at the current RAF equipment listed for this years RIAT.

I am mildly surprised that the Centenary of US Naval Aviation weren't included in the themes of RIAT 11, considering a E-6 Mercury and P-3 and at times KC-130, over the years.

That will be a short show then. Perhaps there should be a minute's silence for the destruction of RAF capability

Riat 2011
Well all you miserable old buggers, and at 70 I am older than most of you, even with the diabolical British weather, the airshow was once again a success and a triumph of good organisation. The RAF was there in good numbers contrary to you miserable lot and 138000 people enjoyed the show.

Used to get 150,000 visitors on a Saturday and just shy of 200,000 on the Sunday not so many years back... |

We had an absolutely marvellous time and knowing what was going on behind the scenes by listening to my scanner radio, hats off and a huge thank you to all those that made it happen. It is great to see that the “can do” attitude still exists, despite some of the negative, half glass empty trash that is posted on this forum. |
How does anyone know if all 138000 enjoyed the show? Were they asked?

My wife and I, along with our 2 children enjoyed the show. Now you just have to ask 137,996 others.
Start of the show for me was the Spartan display, closely followed by the A-10 and the tonka role demo. The chinny was excellent as well, but a little too far from us. |
It was a very good family day out, with a pretty impressive flying display that was only marginally compromised by typical English "Summer" weather!
Static was noticeably thinner that even recent years with, in my view, a pitiful contribution from the RAF, i.e. no C130, VC10, Tristar, E3D, Sentinel, just a single Typhoon on static. No doubting that the contribution was reflective of the times we live in, both in terms of op commitments and cutbacks, but sad to see nevertheless. Likewise the US commitment was smaller than I can ever remember for an AirTattoo. Inevitably it's increasingly a mix between trade/warbird/mil as opposed to the once famous "greatest military show on earth". Still enjoyed three action packed days and will likely be back next year for more. |

I think you'll find there were a few more aircraft around than the single Typhoon. I shot 16+ RAF machines in the static park, not including the Tutors, Spacie gliders and the two Hunters with ZZ serials...... Thanks from Mrs w and I to all who organised and ran the show. OK, we had to sit under an umbrella for a couple of hours. What came in the afternoon and the line up we saw was worth it! :ok: |

bobward - I wasn't trying to say there was only a single Typhoon representing the entire RAF:O I agree it wasn't quite that bad, but you only have to go back a couple of RIAT's to realise that 16 is a pretty low number.
An all time low I'd guess? |
A very good effort put on during testing times. Wife and small ones had a fantastic time, although a little concerned about the maniac in the Spartan. What a guy! If his mother ever catches him doing that she'll be very upset.

Hi, anyone know what happened to curtail the A-10 display on the Saturday? I don’t know the exact reason, however, I was listening to the conversation between the Pilot and the tower and the pilot said that he had a fault that would prevent him performing the rest of the display. However, he was not declaring an emergency. A similar incident seemed to have occurred before the start of the practice display on Friday afternoon. After getting airborne the A10 was loitering at altitude when he informed the tower that he had a fault and would not be doing his display. After several minutes the A10 pilot then informed the tower that he had sorted the problem and would commence the display. I don’t think the tower heard him properly and requested confirmation of this statement. It was then quite amusing to watch the A10 going into a steep dive to commence his first attack run with the tower asking him if he was landing or performing?? I do believe that a different aircraft was used for the display on Sunday as this was what my wife heard on the RIAT radio. Whatever aircraft though, it was an excellent display on each occasion I watched it. |
My very basic description from talking to 'Jam' is a problem with the flight control system. Apparently the A-10 aircraft are flown out from Spang, and the A-10 crew fly out from the west coast. They meet said jets at Fairford which are not the usual display aircraft. Pilots then take the jets for a spin and all hell breaks loose. These aircraft don't have the usual tweaks, and are not used to the joys of display flying. On Saturday the jet pulled about 7g and then decided it had had enough.

Whatever happens, don't let the fun-police find out, this sort of approach to display flying could be viewed in a very dim light. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves! |
