If I look up from where I am sitting I can see a picture of myself standing in front of XS710 at Stradishall, together with 9 other guys on my nav course.

Cant believe that pic was taken 40 years ago. Wish I still looked as good as the Dominie!

camelspyyder 17th Jan 2011 19:40

fingers crossed for 6

Could be a five ship - Hopefully the one of the Doms that needs some dents knocked out will be ready... something to do with the number of gulls it hit on Friday I think:eek:

Dominie

Funny enough saw an 'original' Dominie aka dh89
yesterday headed towards Napier (NZ). Maybe this one

Strad..

Pity they couldn't have included Stradishall in the flypast. I'm selfish as it's just up the road from me. Saw many photo's of the place when at Jock Whitehouses place in Hundon, the guy who alongside Spencer Adams put Strads history into print.

Dominies ready for photo call on 18 Jan

Despite Dominie XS737 having a multiple bird strike on Friday the ac is serviceable and available for the 6 ac photo shoot on 18 Jan 11. A testament to this venerable aircraft. Despite it being expensive to operate it's robust construction is still more appropriate to military aviation than some of it's modern replacements.

Dengue_Dude 18th Jan 2011 12:01

What a horrible little aeroplane . . .

Still, it gave sterling service to the RAF for so many years.

Rust in Peace

I think my feet have finally thawed out after the last Functional.

NutLoose 18th Jan 2011 12:05

Perchance when it visits RR Derby could it flypast EGNX East Mids as well enroute so I could get some piccies........... if you don't ask you dont get :D

tezzer 18th Jan 2011 12:19

Spotted !

Just been over here, right on time in East Yorks, bye ladies !

Another fleet bites the dust !

Jobza Guddun 18th Jan 2011 12:38

Just overflown Guddun Palace, very well flown formation folks.

Guess we'll be looking out for a Nimrod R1 soon as well...

2Planks 18th Jan 2011 14:09

Never again to smell that special aroma: a mixture of sweat, fear and chemical toilet fluid!!

BEagle 18th Jan 2011 14:10

Never good to hear of a fleet retiring with no sign of a replacement:

Vulcan
PR9
Nimrod
Harrier

All had specific capabilities, whether strategic bombing, high level flexible photo reconnaissance (and no, drones have not taken over completely because they cannot go everywhere the PR9 could), maritime patrol or VTOL.

And now it's the end of the Dominie.

Back at the time of the 1977 Silver Jubilunacy flypast at Finningley, 12 raspberry ripple Learning Command aeroplanes were about to launch for a practice from Leeming.

"Why have some of those Dominies got grey noses?", enquired some visiting VSO who'd been let out of the MoD Box and had wandered oop north to watch the events.

"Because, sir, some of those Dominies are Jetstreams. If you look carefully, you'll see they've also got propellers!" announced some Spec Aircrew mate who wasn't totally impressed with the niff-naff and triv associated with the whole thing....:\

20 Mar 74, XS734, Passenger Familiarisation prior to Nav School.

Can't say I enjoyed every one of my sorties in the Dominie but it definitely gave good service to Her Majesty.

Ah well, another of the types I've flown destined to be a Gate Guardian.

:D

Biggus 18th Jan 2011 19:05

Gate guardian?

I doubt it - where?

Geehovah 18th Jan 2011 19:10

Robin Hood International of course!

Biggus 18th Jan 2011 19:14

I doubt they would be interested, just something else to be vandalised by the youf of today...

reynoldsno1 18th Jan 2011 23:59

Loved flying in The Dom - the Decca was a pain and screwed my eyes, but it was a fantastic astro platform - and nice and comfy....

Hairbus 19th Jan 2011 10:17

Just seen 3 fly past my study window close to EMA. Very nice sight.:ok:

XFTroop 19th Jan 2011 11:28

I suspect that there are more Navs declaring fond memories for the Dom than pilots:)
I am one such, having been exposed to it's delights on three separate occasions; on 125 course at 1 ANS Stradishall 69-70, 155 Staff N course Craners 76 and 394 Nav refresher at Finningley in 84.
I must say the change from chugging around the skies in the Varsity doing Basic Nav on 2 ANS at Gaydon to jetting about the stratosphere in the Dom was a bit of a culture shock. Trying to get two pre-comp'd 3 star astro fixes in during a sortie was a bit of a challenge ( they had to be pre-comp'd at flt planning as doing the bl**dy sums used to take longer than the sortie lasted as I recall).Any way, fond memories; sad to see them go.
Tankertrashav: snap on your pickie in front of XS710. got one just like it in front of me right now. Perchance you on 125 at strad? PM me if so.

Fleet retirements

Beags,

It's obvious, mate. The politicos have decided we are going to withdraw from our role as World (or even just Commonwealth) policeman. Therefore, we don't need fancy jets. Lots of boots on parade, yes - it brings in £Zillions from the tourists in London. As for the future of the RAF, forget it. Turning into a (mini-)clone of the the RNethAF. At least they don't grumble about separation and turbulence - 20 years on the same Sqn, on the same base!

When will some politico have the guts to announce the new strategy? Oh, sorry, I forgot: we've just had the all-purpose SDSR.
