Death Stare

From Todays Sun newspaper, so it must be true.:8

THIS new space age helmet enables RAF pilots to shoot down planes - simply by looking at them.
The £250,000 "death helmet" is like something out of Star Wars and one of the biggest advances in attack capabilities ever.

All a pilot has to do to destroy his enemy is give him a death stare.

Targets appear on the inside of the pilot's visor allowing him to pick one and fire.

On target ... helmet lets pilots shoot enemy at a glance
He can even hit a target which is to the side, above or below - as long as it can be seen.

It works using tiny optical sensors on the helmet. These are picked up by other sensors in the cockpit. Leading pilot Mark Bowman said: "It means the end of the dog fight. Traditionally you have to get behind an aircraft to lock on. With this, I steer the weapons with my head."

Developed by Britain's BAE Systems, it is being used in the RAF's Typhoon.

- where has he been these last 40 years or so? I guess he was mis-journo'd?

Hardly new News is it?

The Jaguar GR3a had a HMS in the 90s! The British Army Apache has had the same for some time as well -here's a picture of the UK's next astronaut with one on...

Sounds like a plan, better than having one living next door :ok:

He is Army Air Corp, so perhaps it is projecting reminders as to what is left and right in to his eye.:p

helidriver 3rd Jan 2011 18:42

He's not Army Air Corp! He's Army Air Corps!! Sorry to be pedantic however, you would not like the RAF referred to as Royal Air Farce or FAA as Feet Air Arm. :ok:

Now all that is required is a few jets.....

Rigga 3rd Jan 2011 19:56

Why would we need that when Tranche 4 is an RPV?

Jane-DoH 4th Jan 2011 06:18

I assume the pilot has to hit the pickle switch to actually launch the missile, right?

GreenKnight121 4th Jan 2011 06:31

The AH-1 Cobra has had a helmet-mounted sight since... oh, the Vietnam war.

Runaway Gun 4th Jan 2011 09:37

Yeah yeah yeah, but it wasn't British, so the Cobra sight probably wasn't as heavy as, as expensive as, and as difficult to procure spare parts as this new flash one.

Didn't read the article, I presume this was the beastie

Cheers

Is this the one that was nicked from a display cabinet at a Farnborough Airshow mid-90s?

Even old by UK Standards.
