With redundancy potentially looming I may have to 'dust off' my ATPL, which expired in 2007. Other than the obvious 'speak to FCL' (if that dept still exists), does anyone know the hoops that I will have to jump through?

When I renewed my ATPL(H) last year, all they required was evidence of current flying practice, a class 1 medical and a cheque. Now my licence was actually valid, but the very helpful lady at FCL said it didn't matter as long as I had been current since the last renewal. Phone them up - the worst they can say is NO, and you might as well find out asap.

You will almost certainly have to revalidate an Instrument Rating in there too! LASORS is the place to get the info. Or you could ask BEagle, nicely, for a summary of what is required. ;)

Thanks for the rapid replies.....unfortunately, the 'current flying practice' might be a bit tricky; it's been a while. I might have to invest some of the redundancy funds in a few hours.

To revalidate a JAR-FCL ATPL(A) which expired in April 2007, you will need to do the following (see LASORS 2010 G5):

1. Hold a valid JAA Class 1 medical certificate.
2. Prove that you have held for any class or type rating included in the licence a Certificate of Revalidation the validity of which has not expired by more than 5 years.
3. Complete http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/SRG1102FF.pdf and http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/SRG1187FFenabled1.pdf.
4. Send the medical certificate (keep a duplicate!), both forms and a cheque for £132 to the CAA.

If you cannot meet (2) above, you will also need to obtain a Certificate of Revalidation for any class or type included in your licence.

Which is why I always recommend that everyone has a basic SEP Class Rating in their licence.

Note that an ATPL(A) alone will not give you any right to fly anything unless you also have a valid Type or Class Rating. If you wish to exercise Instrument privileges, you will also need to renew your IR - see LASORS 2010 E1.5.

My ATPL needs renewing later on this year and I was just working out the cheapest way to keep it alive as I don't need to use it in anger for the next few years (yet, still awaiting post SDSR sacking). You have just saved me some time and hassle.
