Is it 100% correct? I was only thinking today how excellent it is that nobody had posted after the thread opener, because as yet no further details have been released, meaning there are still unfortunate relatives who remain to be told. Prior to official release of information, any other details can have a critical effect on any families concerned with troops and Helicopter crews. I hope the newspaper is correct. I have scoured the web and can find nothing concerning the type.

The report in the Metro quotes an eye witness as saying: "I saw a lot of smoke in the sky. It was far away from me, but I could see that it was a helicopter and it went down on the back of the mountain where I couldn’t see."

This aircraft doesn't look like it went down from a great height on the back of a mountain.

I'm dubious that this image is of the crash as CNN etc are quoting US military officals as saying it was a Black Hawk, and whilst I'm no expert, this doesn't look severe enough to have killed nine.

Of course, I could be wrong.....

This abc News report (once you get past the advert) states it was a Blackhawk.

The Metro 'report' is a bl**dy disgrace. It has a hi-res picture of a downed Chinook, described as the crashed aircraft and which looks very survivable, and then goes on to say 'An investigation and search for wreckage was launched'.

You'd need to be a very very thick 'journalist' to let that one through.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A father says a Clark County, Wash., soldier is among the victims of a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan that killed nine service members.

Rod McClellan tells The Columbian that 26-year-old Army Chief Warrant Officer Jonah McClellan is among the dead. The elder McClellan says his son was a Blackhawk helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne and grew up northeast of Battle Ground.

That article then goes on to say that they have no Idea if the Young WO was flying or was a passenger.

So we now have on one thread, claims it was an Osprey, a Blackhawk, or a Chinook. How many families, and wives and kids have kacked their pants for no reason at all, other than the worst of the worst in Journalism and a need to be first one on with the info?

This is a very touchy subject for me. I know a woman who after a mid air was told her husband had survived and was OK, next door but 5 was told her husband had died. 30 mins later the staish arrived to tell them they had screwed up, they got it the wrong way around!!

A rumour network is cool, until someone dies, at that point it is better to be the last to post with the info than the first.

Hopefully there will be an official release soon.

DOD Identifies Army Casualties


The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of five soldiers who died in a helicopter crash Sept. 21 during combat operations in Zabul province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. All soldiers were assigned to 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Killed were:

Maj. Robert F. Baldwin, 39, of Muscatine, Iowa.

Chief Warrant Officer Matthew G. Wagstaff, 34, of Orem, Utah.

Chief Warrant Officer Jonah D. McClellan, 26, of St. Louis Park, Minn.

Staff Sgt. Joshua D. Powell, 25, of Pleasant Plains, Ill.

Sgt. Marvin R. Calhoun Jr., 23, of Elkhart, Ind.

Baldwin was assigned to the brigade headquarters; Wagstaff, McClellan and Calhoun were assigned to the 5th Battalion; and Powell was assigned to the 6th Battalion.
