Dr FOD training films in the early 1980's were standard for Naval Aviators.

God I must have sat through Dr Fod a million times when it was foggy and flying was scrubbed at Coningsby mid 70's. That and the lox film with the guy on the ventilator at the end which was supposed to scare us into good practice when we still used to vent the lox pack onto the pan and freeze stuff in it for a lark.........'Oi what you lot doing'.....'It's just very thick radiation fog chief due to our location in a maritme temperate climate'.......'Er, right yeah I knew that'...............

Aaah the days of intake checks on the Lightning ! Squeeze past the bullet (Radar bit ) and have a look see. Fat gits forget it !! I remember that we did all sorts of checks to determine how the motors were damaged by FOD. We did conclude that it was not the motor that was sucking the stuff up, by putting a layer of poly pellets in front of the intake and going to max power. Did not suck a thing!
Finally discover that by taxiing a little further apart solved the problem. The stuff thrown up by the first guy had settled by the time the second came through. Job done!:ok:

Yes, good to see this after all these years, it brings back very fond memories of watching this one during my technical training in 1977. There was also another film (not nearly as good) from America called something like "The Man from Lox".

How lazy. A moments Googling has turned up the name Monica Thimme. Turns out she has appeared in several Jazz mags - what a turn up, not only rediscovering a favourite film, but discovering that the focal point of said film was a purveyor of the finest Gentlemen's Relish;)

At Waddo we spread out the Vulcan scramble to reduce FOD damage.

Not FOD but still on thread-ish - anyone have a copy of I think it was 'Lt Survivor.' Excellent but entirely non-PC FS vid of an old and bold Pinger and his fresh faced oppo's pre flight preparation... complete with the older one day dreaming instead of getting his goon bag on early enough to avoid ripping the seals etc ...needless to say the subject of his day dreaming (or dreaming, quick nap perhaps) was the reason for his considerable fatigue that morning - some quite vivid visual recollections of the unfortunate lady and her performance the night before :ok: (had he ripped his bag earlier too? :eek:)

Funnily enough they lose a donkey in the dip (or something similar) and take a swim - and he's had his last shag whilst his younger pilot avoids hypothermia.

Happily the two girls present thought it hilarious and it also proved to be a great FS film since I remember it well !:D

Her name was in big red letters in the end credits of the video! :ugh:

Reminds me of one I saw many years ago with a Snowdrop on a bike collecting mushrooms. The star was a Dominie with a open flap.

Wasn't there a FOD FS clip put out in the mid-90s with a rock music backing track? Can't remember the name, but would love to see that again.

ISTR that the RN had quite a good one with a good soundtrack in the mid-90s(?) Filmed on a flat-top IIRC.

And is it not a point worth noting that we actually REMEMBER these films after so long ......

...... and the security one with the nubile WRAF ADC getting serviced by a Russian.......:E

I recall a FOD film which consists of a nut beng thrown in the intake of, I think, an F86, which shook itself apart in about 30 seconds. Then there was the Canadian first aid film which started with a Dakota crashing....

I remember that film, I fainted and had to be removed from the hut where it was being shown. On regaining conciousness our flight NCO gave me a fag and told me to 'rest awhile'. It was 1964 at RAF Hereford and I was 15 years old. I have seen it many times since and I can't think what made me crash.

I remember getting very queasy while watching 'U.S. army medicine in Vietnam' for the first time.

It wasn't the blood and gore that got to me, but the sight of some of the tropical diseases! As someone in their late teens, the thought of getting dengue fever and being covered in spots (I was embarrassed by a bit of acne at the time) was just too much to cope with and I was nearly sick:}

Does anyone remember the FS film which started with the crew ejecting from a Javalin? I first saw it as an ATC cadet in about 1968 & it showed how frustrations with day to day matters can build up.

I'd love to see it put on utube.

Yes, it was the original 'Frustrations' and was an excellent film.

Funny to think that the 'frustrations' in that film would have been considered a good deal these days.

There must be a copy in some dusty FS cupboard somewhere, surely?

excellent post- DR FOD was an actor who was also in a Kids TV series called Cat weazle all a bit creepy. Miss Way-would Body if you google her seems also to be pretty famous- not for the the under 18's but good if you need any tips on hedge trimming!!!
i guess the film was made in about 1975-76- memories of Binbrook as the shiny jets were being toned down- more than anything it captures well life in the RAF in the 70's always foggy!- I recall a copy on the Video bookcase in the 11 Squadron crew room just a little worried that someone popped it in his bag for 30 years!
I seem to recall another film about a Jag mate who crashes after being nibbled to death by ducks, Admin refusing a home to duty claim etc which sadly based on true events i recall

Wasn't the one about the Jag called 'Distractions'?

I seem to dimly remember watching it at BFTS.

This would have kept Dr Fod busy, often wondered what the chute was for, obviously to collect all the broken parts in :p

Flt Lt ASHBY was the Jag pilot and it was something about a late arm key that he missed on his checks and when he tried to jettison the tanks it didn't work,
(how come these ancient flight saftey and CRM videos stick in the mind yet I still forget the wifes birthday!)

There is still a copy of it in the Leuchars CRM files, or there was last year when I was having a nose.

I've just seen the Jaguar Distractions film. It was on a Cd of RAF films from the 1980's available via the South American river. They have a whole series of films from the 1950's up to the 90's available. sadly though, my favourite (12sqn Buccaneers) isn't on any of the CD's - quelle domage!!

Still a great film, brings back memories.

The best flight safety films were made by the Royal Navy. Ejection seat fired over the side, rocket salvo fired across the flight deck of a carrier etc. - and all before the days of CGI.

I know it's from a post in 2010, but I've only just started following this thread. Would that be Ted Ashby and, if so, does anyone know what happened to him?
