Iranian Drone - Times Article
 

Just finished reading todays times article about a new Iranian drone which can carry a weapons load. I haven't finished laughing yet though because as far as I can see the new Iranian "terror weapon" looks as if it was built from a set of V1 doodlebug blueprints.........

So lets give the Israelis a squadron of spitfires, that should just about even things up.......

Even the North Koreans are less ridiculous than the Iranians if you ask me and we should resist all temptations to give their mentally unstable leader too much air time for his fantasy weapons...

Expect to see more 'Iran' stories as they are progressively demonised in the media prior to a future military attack.

Well, that fits, doesn't it? Domestic copies of the "Bladerunner 51" speedboat, small "stealth" submarines, indigenous missiles, reworked F-14 electronics etc - it's all really more scareware than seriously worrying weaponry, whatever the newspapers say.

I gather, btw, the obvious response for the US and Israel will be not to attack or provoke military action, but just to keep them on the edge for the next 30 or so years, waiting for things to change in Iran. No need for prompt action if you ask me.

They are hardly just re-working the US-sourced equipment from the Shah's time, they're using uber amounts of effort on generating their own next generation technology:

Depends on what the Iranians do with their fissile material and "waste" products, but there's probably no need for a complex delivery system. Surprised that the Iranian nuclear project (might be civil, could be military) has reached the stage it is reportedly at with no intervention from the Israelis.

Boats don't look up to much and if the Russians had built that low tech fighter we would have called it the F5ski, so a lower tech variant of an already obsolete fighter.., whats the Persian equivalent of "ski" is it "nejad" in which case we have the v1nejad and the F5nejad on show :E

Only worrying picture is the new Chinese technology, are you sure that they have licensed it to the Iranians ?

Sale of J-10s announced as early as 2007 - don't know when the deliveries will be? Also Russia rumoured to be selling Su27 and AAR capabilities; all quoted in open source.

The concept is based on US drones from the 1970s. Iran already operated US supplied Beech MQM-107s supplied during the Shah period. They recently produced their own copy and paraded it a few years ago.

These are all based on US designs by Beech. The design has simply been updated to do away with the under fuselage podded engine.

Iran has displayed this new drone variant armed with Kowsar anti-ship missiles. For Iran it makes perfect sense to develop these type of weapons and mass produce them. The aim would be to saturate a naval target via a number of methods. The Iranians have stated that they will mass produce an armed variant of the Bladerunner speedboat.

Iran also obtained a number of AS-15 Kent (Kh-55) cruise-missiles via Ukraine during an illicit arms sale. Technology from the 1980s, but you can expect Iran to exploit it.

There are no J-10s in Iran. There are no J-10s anywhere outside China.

Iran's own aerospace tech is workmanlike but very second rate. They only thing they have got right is their missiles.

The arms embargo imposed on Iran has put paid to any such sale of J-10s. Even prior to the arms embargo China wouldn't supply their version of the S-300 (HQ-9) in order not to jeopardise military deals with Russia. At the time of the Iranian J-10 rumours the Chinese were still reliant on Russia for engine technology until they developed their WS-10 engine.

Even the rumours of Iranian Flanker (Su-27/30) sales failed to materialise. Russia never seemed interested in supplying large numbers of Flankers to Iran. The result is that Iran was forced to concentrate on keeping their ageing US and Russian fleet flying and attempt to produce copies of the F-5.

The Iranians seem resigned to the fact that they will have to produce their own aircraft to meet their future needs. They have already designed and built a small jet trainer and they plan to develop a fighter based on a cancelled Russian-Iranian project. The project came from the Russian Mukhamedov design bureau and appears to be the only way that Iran can produce a fighter in the future.

Iran exhibited models and produced a mock-up. The type is know as the Safagh.
