RAF aircrew colour vision requirements

Hi

I am an air cadet and am seriously considering applying to the RAF as a pilot. However, my colour vision is not perfect, so I could really use some insider knowledge on just how stringent the test is.

I find the standard Ishihara test (coloured dots) very hard, but after much staring can get most right - I scored 9/10 on a test.

On the City colour blindness severity test (comparing coloured circles) I got 100% right.

I had my test results put on an RAF form by an optician (9/10 Ishihara, 100% City) and sent it to the medics at Cranwell. I got a form back with a big circle over all RAF branches including Pilot. However, I know how severe they are, so cant help but feel thet I was being fobbed off.

Can anyone help?

I'm not being flippant, but.......Realistically, there is only one way to find out.

You either pass or fail. Endex. Thank God you don't have asthma!

What did the "big circle" indicate? If it was over all branches perhaps it was perhaps not a bad thing as other branches do not have as stringent eyesight requirements as aircrew - therefore if your tests show that the colour problems are mild you may be suitable?!

In the colour tests you got 9/10 and 100%... and the bods at Cranwell (presumably) say you are colour vision fit. What is your question again? Apply, get tested at AOSC and you will have your answer!

Colour test.

Europaflyer,

As others have said, go for it. My colour vision is in the same category as yours, and I passed all the tests and spent eight years as a navigator. I remember when I did aircrew selection lots of people failed for problems they were unaware of.....so give it a go! Good luck.
