British Serviceman Dies In Alps Avalanche

Alison Chung, Sky News Online
A British serviceman has been killed in an avalanche in the Bavarian Alps, the Ministry of Defence has said.

Police spokesman Christian Owsinski says that a group of 27 British troops were on a ski training exercise in the Bavarian Alps when they were surprised by the avalanche.

The avalanche struck at an altitude of 5.000 feet (1.500 meters) when the group was skiing down the Riedbergerhorn mountain.

Two of them were dug out of the snow but a third airman was found unconscious.

Paramedics brought in by helicopter later declared him dead.

An MoD spokesman said: "It is with great sadness the Ministry of Defence must confirm that an RAF service person has been killed in Oberstdorf, Bavaria today.

"The individual was taking part in an adventurous training exercise when he was caught in an avalanche.

"The MoD would like to express sincere condolences to the family at this very sad time."

The airman's next of kin have been informed.

RIP

That's bad luck, or (maybe) bad judgement - I've skied and snowboarded Oberstdorf (including Riedbergerhorn) for a season and it is not a high-risk area. I see it was fairly warm there today - it will be enlightening to learn what flank they were on, at what time..

Your post is a little too blunt given that one of our brethren has just lost his life and his family lost a son.

Telegraph reporting statement from MOD that it was an AT exercise. If that is the case, it is especially sad. AT is one of the rare bright lights in an otherwise increasingly dark world we operate in.
