Re-use of RAF Driffield by the Army

The Army at Leconfield look set to use another ex RAF station for driver training.

Army looks at Driffield base for Afghansistan war effort

Does anybody know the state of the rest of the site?

The Army has been using the airfield for driver training since January 1st 1977 when it became Alamein Barracks. The firm that laid the runways dug them up for hardcore and the hangars were put to use for grain storage. Until recently the MQ were used for personnel at Staxton Wold but the accomodation has been in the hands of developers for some time.

Nice to see the otherwise-redundant estate being put to good use.

Funnily enough I remember at the end of my HGV 3 training at Buller Barracks Aldershot, driving to Leconfield to deliver said truck as part of my first ever convoy.......at least I think I remember that, it's all so long ago:(

Did my HGV3 at Leconfield during the winter of 78, with the tactical & cross-country phase at Driffield, returning for recovery training for my B1 Driver upgrade on the hills at Driffield as W. Clifford Watts were lifting the runways. The camp was being used as overflow accomodation for Leconfield, mostly RCT Junior Leaders.

There are several photo shoots of Driffield at 28dayslater, eg:

Looks to me like the camp is beyond redemption.

Was there in 89. Sad to see those pictures of what at the time was a reasonable satelite camp for Leccy.
As a teeny weeny we did not fit in that well with the RCT types. But still some good times where had there.
