Indonesian Shootdown

Urban myth?

A very persistant rumour or folklore of an RAAF shootdown of an Indonesian transport aircraft during confrontation 1963.C130 service entry?Or possibly Russian type.

The victim of RAAF Sabres based out of Butterworth.Former service pilots swear by the name of the pilot involved.

Latest variation I have heard was the RAF shot down the transport with Javelins out of Tengah.

Is there similar RAF folklore?

ORAC 9th Feb 2002 23:07

"The Javelin held on for a few years longer in the Far East, where it gained its only air to air victory - an Indonesian C-130 which crashed while trying to avoid a Javelin that had been sent to intercept it during the Malayan crisis in 1964".

Thanks for the links gentleman,

Still a little puzzled. Two C130 shootdowns during confrontation.

RAAF folklore CA27 Sabre shotdown an Indonesian C130 with an AIM9B.From retired service pilots, the Sabre pilot only recently passed away in a GA accident.

AUS/INDO relations always sensitive, especially media related.

Black missions during the 60s 70s no secret amongst former RAAF pilots.Main protagonist Canberra bombers.

Thought that the C-130 kill by a Javelin was 'Red Top' (eg Firestreak?) or guns, and that the manoeuvre kill was a 'Badger'.

Don't think so; certainly never found anything in print to suggest the Jav actually fired weapons in anger, but the "Help help we're being chased by something out of Buck Rogers... hang on, what's this thing rushing up to meet us?" version is in a couple of books at least.

OK gentleman,

Sept 64 RAF responsible for C130 shootdown.

Sept 65 C130 shootdown?Any links with details?

RAAF shootdown rumours from former Sabre pilots.

Armourers also believe the incident took place, missing Sidewinder and expended cannon.

I was at Tengah at that time. 60 and 64 operated Javelins, not always successfully! The word was that the Indonesian C130 dropped parachutists in the border area, and was shot down by a Javelin on the way out.The missile was a Firestreak; Sidewinders were not in use. The troops were cleaned up by Ghurkas apparently.
