RAF give Flt Safety to RN
 

Guys and Girls. .I am a long long way from home right now and have been for some time. I don't know if there has been a thread on this topic, please excuse and advise if so.

I have heard to my utter astonishment that we (the RAF) are about to close down either the inspectorate of Flt Safety as we know it, or certain Depts within it. We are giving either of these responsibilities to the RN.

Nothing against the RN, i've got good buddies there, but this is akin to giving the RAF responsibility for Ship Safety because we used to have a few motor launches.

I know th RN produce a few good videos but that is it. Talk to the boys and they will tell you that they (the RN) pay complete lip service to Flt Safety and CRM issues.

No more Wing Commander Spry!! How many more swords will we fall on?

Oh really - and which well informed boys would that be then, as it certainly doesnt resemble the Fleet Air Arm I know. Perhaps you would like to rephrase your inflammatory and incorrect post?

The RN Cockpit magazine is by far the best FS publication. Best cartoons too.

Based on that comment I suggest we start a . ."Tigs for Air Marshall" campaign - given the example set by Wratten and Day! Ideal candidate for Promotion in my view :)

Having done a job or two on the dark side...I can honestly say you, Tigs, are talking ripe old tripe! The RN are VERY FS aware, especially for such a seemingly small outfit. The RAF have the lions-share of the assets/resources, and as such also do a very good job. The crew at IFS at the mo are a well motivated and dedicated bunch who have rung the changes to that dreary old mag, Air Clues, into a relavant and up-to-date publication. I don't think that we'll be handing over the 'con' to No2 just yet. From what I gathered last summer at the FS offs Course, all 3 services would COMBINE their FS Orgs and negate the very obvious duplications that currently occur. Obviously each Service does slightly different jobs and so will have 'specialists' in post to ensure that type specific concerns are properly dealt with.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, then we can put this thread and Tigs to bed! <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> :) <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Won't say which particularly sad course I was on before XMAS, but it wasn't far from Swindon and has lots of senior officers there studying not a lot of importance except their own careers.....

On said course Wg Cdr Spry himself confirmed that the amalgamation of Flt Safety for all three services was planned, Wg Cdr Spry himself would disappear and the much loved Airclues, Cockpit etc. would all be lost to the ether... to be replaced by a "purple" magazine yet to be named.

There goes another good tradition (and before anyone says it maybe it is only really a habit!)

Just to say to the RN from ex RAF your attitude to Flight Safety was very refreshing. If something went wrong, find out the reason to stop anyone else repeating the error but don't crucify the offender, just thank God it wasn't you.

Art,. .You hit the nail on the head with the crucifiction theme-you only have to look at the Chinook accident investigation to prove your point.

Flying tactical aircraft on and off ships by day and night in marginal weather is a dangerous activity-far more dangerous than flying from a land base. I've done both for years and 99% of all my scary moments happened at sea. If you fly at sea, expect some attrition. But when it happens, find out why, and how the risk of recurrence can be minimised within the framework of your operational requirements. Most Navies around the World that operate aircraft have a higher accident/incident rate than their respective air forces. That is not a reflection on their attitude to flight safety; it is just the nature of the game we play.

Tigs brings back to mind an expression coined by the SE section about a certain individual on board OCEAN a couple of years ago - "Wire-locked to the planet tw*t without a pair of snips in sight!"

What is next is JSP 551 replacing AP 3207 when they get the new book written.

On the Flight Safety side, I am certain we all have things to learn from each other. The bigger danger may be losing sight of the very special risks involved in operating off ships (speaking from 2 weeks of thoroughly eye-opening experience!). .Sven

Tigs cant be Admin Guru in disguise - surely. Maybe its his brother. As a crabbo working with the RN I can expect banter from the fishheads here that read PPrune as a result of your meaasage - oh wait a minute - its Friday lunchtime and they have all gone weekend.;-)

OK guys. .I have never been on this forum to offend anyone and the quote that seems to have caused most offence was from someone on an exchange tour. I was trying to get down to the root of the rumour that the responsibility for Flt safety is shifting. So far only one person has made any atempt to reply without venting off.

By the way I am not a T**t nor do I need radar vectors from NASA.

Tigs - if you want a civilised answer it often pays to ask a civilised question! :)

Slagging people off as you did in your first Post, particularly second-hand as it turns out, is a dangerous game and is hardly likely to get you far - as you found out! You had it coming to you Mate!
