Uniform nostalgia questions

I've just put my number one police uniform back in to my faithful EC Snaith cover, which I got at Cranwell in 1988. It is now getting a bit ridiculous, as the slot at the top for the hanger is now the entire width of said cover.

first of all, is this a record for the longevity of one of these items? Secondly, where can I get a new one? Snaiths don't seem to have a website. I have a romantic vision in my head of greying men in waistcoats, tape around their neck, still plying their trade at small tailoring stores at long-forgotten RAF outstations, writing out your bill on carbon-copy pads and placing beautifully embroidered brevet and wings in substantial brown paper bags, secured with just the right amount of sellotape.

halcyon days......

There was still a Snaithes at Cranwell last time I was down that way (07), so try the MOD director, and ask there? If not just ask the MOD director for any Snaithes.

(01745) 812218

Found the above number on Google, one of a number of Snaithes across the country I believe!

Hope thats of some help!

Got my best blue coverall from Snaiths in 1983 - still in service!!

Gainesy 26th Oct 2009 18:21

Don't your local friendly squippers still knock them out as a sideline?

Grabbers 26th Oct 2009 21:27

Gainesy,

Great idea with one slight flaw. How many squippers do you know friendly with scuffers? In fact, how many of anyone are friendly with scuffers?

Snaith's still have a shop at RAF Cranwell and advertise in Air Force News from time to time. There is another contract tailor who makes and fits No: 1s for the officer cadets and the 'station tailor' also sells a range of uniform and other kit.

STANDTO, were`nt you issued `wif an `ousewife` at Cramfull ?I would`ve thought as a `Police Orficer`,almost Chief Constable, that you should be able to do a bit of sewing, part of police training innit ? stitching -up bikers ?
Or ,isn`t there still a `haberdashers` in the Square in Ramsey ? What about the `internees` in the Gaol, they`ve still got loads of mailbags to finish,or perhaps you could just `use` a mail bag !!!

PS ;my hat, coat and out the door...FUNNY COLOURED CAR WITH LIGHTS OUTSIDE ?

Just found my 1966 messkit trousers in the corner of a wardrobe and tried them on.
Must be rubbish material - shrunk around the waist by eight inches
