Flying with the 'Dambusters'

Posted on the BBC. Images taken from inside the cockpit of a Lancaster during a flypast to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters.

Good find. :ok:

Great stuff! The Derbyshire Peak District. Howden, Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs. 617 Sqn used this area for practice prior to the raid, hence the return of the Lanc.

Nice work if you can get it.
Loved it.:ok:

Excellent video:ok:,
Is it possible to watch the video all the way through without humming the music, or is it just me?

T10 15th Oct 2009 18:24

no it isn't. I have tried several times.
T10 is off to watch the Battle of Britain :8

Back in the late 1940s I went as an ATC cadet to summer camp at Oakington whilst there we were given a talk on the Dams raid by Squadron Leader 'Micky' Martin who had piloted one of the aircraft on the Dams raid. Early the next morning we were loaded into a York and were taken on a reenactment of the raid. I would like to say it was the most memorable flight of my life, but unfortunately I spent most of the flight being violently airsick and dont remember much about it. At least no one was shooting at us.

kevmusic 15th Oct 2009 21:48

Fantastic stuff! :ok: I was interested in the sound. In all our reading of wartime ops the one thing we can't get a decent idea of is: what did a Lanc sound like from the inside? And this video gives us an idea. Against all my expectations at least, the mix was about 80% airflow & buffet to 20% engines.

For forty years I've been reading of Lancaster ops over Europe and in my imagination the sound inside was all engines - four Merlins amplified by all those rigid and boxed metal sections.............wrong!! :O

kevmusic,

Some idea of the noise inside a Spitfire, here.

More like a Fergie tractor than the iconic Merlin growl ;)

Anyone notice the Tornado go over the top at time...6.17?

Took me a while to figure the two vertical dark bars are reflections of the nose guns.:ugh:

Lightning Mate 16th Oct 2009 13:51

Mmmmm.....

Done that run a few times, but at 450 Kts.

3D CAM 16th Oct 2009 14:13

Now imagine it at night! With everything, including the kitchen sink, being thrown at you!
Utmost respect for those guys from long ago!!:ok:
And thanks!

Way back in Summer 2000, I had the great chance of flying with 617Sqn low-level across the Kuwaiti desert.

Thanks to Bambi.

I am now back working with the BBMF Lanc crew.

barnstormer1968 17th Oct 2009 10:32

Thank you for posting. A very emotive video, and compared with the Buccaneer video talked about on another thread, this shows just how much of an easy target these Lancaster's were (oh, and yes,I could hear the music in my head too).

I have mixed views about the dams raid, and it's success depends largely on what the outcome should have been (i.e. tactical/strategic/morale (both sides)/propaganda), but have no doubts whatsoever on the crews involved, and am shrunk with humility by their efforts on such a difficult and almost one way mission!:ok:
