Royalty not happy with RAF - What gives...?

Is the airfare too expensive for Royalty to dish out because 'The Royal' Squadron is a little busy in sunnier climates right now.?

Princess Royal cancels on veterans after RAF leaves her grounded - Telegraph

Come-on Royals, don't blame the RAF on personal transport problems, I understand a war is being fought elsewhere.

mckelvey 22nd Aug 2009 05:36

Normally a Royalist & Princess Royal fan but I am appalled by the arrogance. "cannot justify a private jet". What about a bloody train or if thats too slow a scheduled flight.:ugh::ugh::ugh:

Impiger 22nd Aug 2009 06:25

It is a shame that the Princess Royal can't make the event but did anyone else spot how the reporter decided to blend fact with his own interpretation of how others might see this incident

Quote: In what will be interpreted as a pointed rebuke to the Government over its refusal to increase the Civil List Unquote.

Who says it will be interpreted in this way? This is only the view of the journalist in question (and presumably his editors) - it is high time British media stopped promoting their own views of life and reported factually and completely! Rant off.

SRENNAPS 22nd Aug 2009 06:53

Well said Impiger. :D:D

This is one of those stories where a lot of people here will be quite willing to believe the press on this occasion because it allows them to have a dig.

I am pretty certain there are a lot of “facts” to this story that won’t be released by the press.

Lots of facts that won't be released and loads of lies and speculation that will!

Brewers Droop 22nd Aug 2009 10:07

Cracked it!

Think I've cracked it.

Her Wee Jock driver gives her a lift to Aberdeen (Think thats the nearest station). She takes the 0907 to Kings Cross arriving 1646 and is picked up by one of the spare bods from Mummy and Daddy's house. I am sure there are a few people around London that have a spare room she can use. Now, if she spends a day with the corgis and goes back on the 3rd from Euston leaving at 0930 she can get a bargain Super Off-Peak Return for £124 (Probably even cheaper if she has a railcard).

Better hurry though or the price will rise.

God I'm good. Even gives her a day to do the tourist thing.

Update: There's even a forward facing window seat in the quiet carriage. It just gets better!

Anyone know any facts other than the palace spokesperson's (quoted) statement? Where was she to travel from and to and what was her timetable around this? The immediate question that springs to mind is why could she not use schedules?

BEagle 22nd Aug 2009 11:00

Perhaps one of her brother's kids could rustle up a Chinook for 'navigation training'?

Gainesy 22nd Aug 2009 16:11

I really can't believe anybody gives a toss.

CirrusF 22nd Aug 2009 20:50

If any of the senior Royals deserves some slack - it is the Princess Royal. So shut up the lot of you.

Could well be a briefing from the Palace.

Queen Furious

I am reminded of the reliable report of Her Majesty opening her neatly ironed copy of her preferred newspaper and remarking "Dear me, I see We are furious again".

The Princess Royal is one of the busiest of the Royal Family so it is just possible that without the helicopter she may have had to cancel many appointments rather than just one. The anti-Royal attitude of the majority of the British press corps is well known and they are not going to miss a single opportunity to put any member of the family down.

I gather that the Telegraph has been undergoing something of a sea change of staff this year starting with one senior appointment from a red-top who has subsequently replaced quality journos with more scum from the gutter-press. Maybe we will see more uninformed speculation from what was previously a quality paper.

green granite 23rd Aug 2009 06:45

I read it as more of a dig at the penny pinching government than the RAF

Strobin Purple 23rd Aug 2009 07:52

Hey, hang on fellas, we're about to get another pearl of wisdom from Brandnew, the voice of the AAC, he of North American geography expertise.

I wait with baited breath......or B..

On the other topic of DT standards of late, I agree. Thought it was just me. Apparently many of the old school DT journos afre hacked off with the dumbing down of their rag after the new ed(?) took over. Shame, I'll have to find another crossword to master.

Brandnew..... There is nothing new there....the RAF have always operated like that... 2 examples...

I once went to a meeting in Plymouth regarding the planning for a JMC. At the meeting were 4 or 5 RAF chaps who had flown down from Nimrodland somewhere in Scotland. The meeting was planned to last just 1 day but they had booked themselves into the Copthorne Hotel for 3 days. I asked them how on earth they managed to get a non availibility chit in Plymouth (plenty of military accommodation available) and they replied that they printed one out themselves (forged one)

At the same JMC we were working on a detachment out of RAF Stornoway... the base had been opened and was operating as part of the JMC. Accommodation was ok...food was brilliant and the bar superb. One day all hell breaks lose as a Tornado had a snag and was diverting into RAF Stornoway (Plenty of accomm available) but no....the said Accomm was not good enough and so the 2 chaps booked themselves into a hotel in town.

The Junglies also do their training in Morocco (and Kenya) and so I wonder how one part of JHC conducts valuable and relaistic training whilst the other half goes on a pi$$ up in Vegas.

So your tale of the RAF fleecing the tax payer under the pretence of conducting valuable training is not new.... sad but not new.

In late 2006 Al Udeid inmates particularly enjoyed seeing a RAF 3* and entourage fly in and out of Doha BA Club Class and (I think) stop in a hotel downtown, during yet another a 'morale boosting' visit. We figured they must have desparately struggled to find dates when the half-full 767s from BZZ weren't operating.
