PITA - Forces ReUnited spamming

Has anyone else been inundated with 'New Friend Alerts'.

In my options, I'd made sure I'd selected NOTHING.

I've just bounced about 60 emails back to them.

Anyone got a contact address?

Try finding one on their site - the only one that looked promising bounced, saying this mailbox didn't take inbound emails.

I would appreciate knowing where they hang out, I shall re-direct all MY spam there.

Thanks

Forces Reunited New Friends

Sorry you feel aggrieved. We recently did an upgrade on profile matching, which is what the Forces Reunited site is really all about, and it had the side-effect of releasing a lot of pent-up stuff. This will have been a one-off event and we can tell you that the wave has now passed.

If you had a training unit in your profile, such as RAF Yatesbury, RAF Swinderby, etc. there will have been a particularly big bulge. If you need to talk to us, the plumbing for getting through to our Support is the link on each message.

We suggest you run an Auto Match Search when convenient to see if any useful names washed in on the tide.

Beware of Forces Reunited

Since before Xmas I have been receiving a multitude of emails from Forces Reunited soliciting me to renew my subscription which I do not wish to do.
When I contacted them by email to ask them to remove my out of date membership they advised me to use the unsubscribe function on their website.
When I tried to do this to I was refused access because, you've guessed it, I was no longer a member.
So, the system seems to be that you need rejoin them to get your name removed from their database. It seems a pretty low way to solicit a fiver from a pensioner.
You may have thought that this would have died down by now but it has kicked off again with the latest last chance to join.
Am I the only person experiencing such harassment?

valveclosed 26th Jan 2011 21:36

gents, i will try and get a contact address and get this sorted, I have a contact that works for em

fergineer 27th Jan 2011 01:06

Good cos my inbox gets them almost every day..... into the deleted box they go.

Pontius Navigator 27th Jan 2011 06:59

I use Firetrust Mailwasher which after a time automatically deletes Spam.

I haven't had the Forces U spam but the School one, that too has died down now.

ColinB 27th Jan 2011 20:15

Three more today, still its only three more days until the end of the latest offer.

fergineer 27th Jan 2011 21:26

Until the next one, this has been ongoing for a long time now.

ColinB 25th Apr 2011 16:34

They are still coming in. I repeat you can't get removed until you can gain access to the unsubscribe function by joining them again. :ugh::ugh::ugh:

Shack37 25th Apr 2011 17:05

Maybe some PMs to JimPr might raise the matter closer to home.

P6 Driver 25th Apr 2011 18:30

After all the publicity they have had over the past few years, people still go ahead and sign up to these "social networking" sites. :ugh: :ugh: :ugh:

I work with a couple of people who signed up to similar sites and bitterly regret doing so, especially when they found out just how obstructive the path to unsubscribing can be made. :\

Hey guys while I'm not familiar with force re-united or whichever sites are aggravating you, I do know you can add their email's to your spam list.

Jim is no longer working at FR.
Please PM me directly with the email addresses you are receiving unwanted mails on and I will deal with it personally.

Usually unsubscribing kills all emails going out as they are taken from the same database so I would be very interested in passing on this problem to our tech desk here at FR.

Sometimes people unsubscribing forget they have more than one email address on the database as they have registered a few times (not saying that's what has happened here: it just happens!).

Obviously it's not in FRs best interests to spam people, so PM me and I'll get it sorted for you.

It is rarely necessary for a domestic user to buy software to defeat spam.

Any half decent ISP should have spam options on their mail server (BTYahoo is very easy to use) and if any get through that, any proper email client (Outlook) will also filter it for you when set correctly.

Filters on ISP mail servers and email clients are active filters. In other words, once you get something you consider spam, you can block any further traffic from that email address simply by adding it to the spam list.

Anti spam software (which big businesses use) usually has a passive component, which examines the headers and contents of all emails and blocks anything the rules don't allow. The trouble with the domestic user buying this stuff is that to be any good it costs a lot of money. Cheap stuff is little better than using the previously mentioned server/client options. If your ISP does not have them...maybe time to change??

EX IT geek out.

HOW DARE THEY?

Forces Reunited have just sent me, in a single email, a reminder of my login address and password, in clear. :=
How unprofessional can they get? Clearly this is not an organization to get involved with unless you want personal details broadcast to the world.
Cross - me? You bet.

timbo58 1st Dec 2011 15:10

I apologise you feel this is insecure FR send passwords ONLY to that address which it is registered to.

Please explain why that is insecure?
I don't see this as published or publically available at all I'm afraid, published to the world? -not unless the world ALL use your email address.

Also wouldn't it be better to actually inform the FR support system of your concerns?

[Wah cloak on]

Email uses the internet to traverse between endpoints. This is a system that has no controls, no built-in encryption, and is manned by who-knows.

The switches and routers that make up the core of the internet can be programmed to copy off the content passing through them. All it takes is a spotty IT wallah to do that. Spotty IT wallahs don't get paid very much. It doesn't take the brains of an Archbishop to figure out that they can be bribed.

If N727NC has used the same login credentials for his internet banking, it might go horribly wrong for him, and he's right to raise this as a concern.

Woe is Me

I mistakenly made an enquiry on Forces Reunited which was unfulfilled unless I joined which I did not. I am now being spammed again and the unsubscribe button does not work, presumably because I am not a member.
Does anyone know how I un-hook myself?

Brian W May 11th Nov 2015 14:59

When I started this thread (as Dengue_Dude) I was being inundated. Despite all protestations it's murder trying to 'unhook' as you put it.

They don't seem to realise that doing this alienates people and that dissatisfaction gets broadcast like wildfire.

They've now shot another toe off . . . best of luck

If you look at the beginning, I think it still gives contact details.
