Harrier GR3 Tyres and wheel rims
 

Hi.
I am the civcom secretary of an ATC Squadron. We have Harrier GR3 XV752 as the squadron gate guardian. After several years outside the air frame is now in need of a refurb. We have a project plan for this and as part of that plan we would like to replace the main under carriage and
outrigger tyres. We have identified a possible source at RAF Cottesmore but would anyone know of any alterantive sources of supply? Any help you can give regarding the procurement of tyres and spare wheel rims would be greatly appreciated.

You could try these people EVERETT AERO SALES & SUPPORT. it might cost you a few quid. Unless you have something worthy of a exchange.

Dont ask how I know this - but the tyre sizes for Harrier mainwheels are very similar to the Chinook's tyres and I'm sure they used to supply Harrier Retreads to Chinooks at one time!

Perhaps a couple of phone calls to Odiham or Wittering/Cottesmore may help you?

That Chinook idea, if they are similar, might be your best bet.

From my time with Harriers at BAe, and current position with a museum, I can tell you all Harrier 1 parts in any decent condition are either pricey or gone, snapped up.

The Indian Navy still operate Harrier 1 FRS51's & T4/T60 trainers.

They have already robbed everything going including gate guardians, in a project with BAe !!!

Art Nalls, who has his private Sea Harrier FA2 in the U.S, had to outbid the Indian Navy for some parts - he won.

I'd suggest tarting up what you've got, the main leg will be supported by the lock and A, is virtually invisible, B, how bad can it be ?!

The nose leg is more important, it's depressing to see sad looking unpressurised examples like Duxford's.

There must be scouser working at Cottesmore or Wittering. Buy him a pint and .......

...his mate will nick the tyres you have and flog them to the Indians. Good news though, he will leave your Harrier up on bricks.

Regrading the idea about Chinook tyres. Does anyone know their size.

I have taken a look at the Harrier tyres and have come up with the following info.

Front tyre

26 x 8.75-11

Main landing gear tyres

27X7.75-13

Outriggers (obviously not available from a Chinook)

13 1/2 x 6.00-4

Have you tried ebay or amazon?

Harrier wheel covers never were retreaded in my time at Cottesmore, they were scrapped because of the lightweight design of the cover did not lead itself to the process required to retread an aircraft cover (or it could have been cost, my mate at AS3 never told me). I wouldn't have thought this had changed.

I have some non-airworthy ones that may be suitable for you.

We had a brake fire a year or so ago and damaged a tire and wheel, plus we've got a tire that we just changed for tread wear. I know a recapper that could make them look cosmetically new. Whether he would take your word that they are NOT to be used for any flight is another story or he could drill a small hole in the tire no one would ever see.

We can trade for ???

Kilonovember - We keep a close eye on the scousers at Cottesmore! There are u/s tyres which would be suitable for a static aircraft . Regards the nose leg deflating - I modified the IWM GR.3 for them so it doesn't happen any more -pm me if you want any help!

The Harrier GR3 XV752 is now on aircraft jacks at Bletchley Park awaiting new tyres. We have the tyres but a trying to find a company who will hard fille them with foam or polyurethane. If anybody knows a company who does this can you please send me the details. Any help and adviuse would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks.

Duxford does that tyre stuff - you could start with someone like ARC

Arclite01. Thanks. I've tried Duxford. They gave me a lead to a tyre company that I'm following up. However, they no longer hard fill their aircrfat tyres. The use axel stands instead which is probably beyond our budget.

Jack up the nose leg, deflate the nose wheel, put about 12 cans of holts tyre foam in it and reifflate the tyre, jobsagoodun, it 'll do a trip chief, but only one mind you.

Fill the tyres with concrete and re-assemble the rims while its still soft, allow it to go hard and then put back on the A/C.

Alternatively get some Axle stands made - probably not very expensive - might even get them made for free by local sources

we do on construction sites with wheelbarrows and it works a
treat. If the sqn can't afford it let know as being a Scouser and
4 Sqdns Ex Supplier it would be a pleasure to bail a 3 Sqdn Jet
out again!!!
