Lossie is a great place, was there for 5 years very recently. Very long days in summer unfortunately become very short days in winter. Embrace the area and you'll enjoy it - go out to the west coast, some great little b&b's and hotels out there. It's not too noisy and anyway, jet noise is the sound of freedom. We had a great time but were happy to move on, I guess that's how all tours should be - more importantly, there's a great family/livers in type atmosphere as most people don't run away at weekends (because they can't). It's why I think it's one of the most sociable bases in the Uk. Some will disagree but that's because they never served there or if they did - they had no friends 'cos they failed to go out and meet people. You'll have a good time if you go and meet people, it's a lovely area, best of luck.

Seriously - the public transport aint bad(1 bus/ hour) and the east beach at lossie is only a brisk walk from Bishopmill if you go on the old railway line so your dogs will love it.

I've been an exile since 1972 and envy you. But try and stay away from the Crabs - they're a miserable buch of gits :O

Lossie has two beaches - west and east. West lies off the end of the main runway t'other side of the glof course where can be heard the traditional noise of " swish...f**K"

East beach suffers from erosion on the sand dunes and (when I was there) did actually perform as a surf spot. Water was warm (relatively), clean and very uncrowded.

If I could get a civvy job lossie way I'd take the wife and move back without question. I really liked the place, if I had the wife when I was there it would have been perfect.

There is soooo much to do outside of drinking and drinking, have fun.

You must nip down the road to Elgin and get some fuel. The first garage you come across on the left might be a surprise. Just remember 'Leads the Field!"

Quarters
 

Two years ago at least there were a few quarters available to officers in Lossie, on North and South Covesea Terrace, very close to the camp. Near the school unfortunately but the houses were large and well built, with large gardens and great views from the top of the hill - a fantastic sight of the mid-summer sun setting over the Ross and Sutherland Highlands. It was a great place to be if you only cycle or walk - you've got a Co-Op, swimming pool, library and beaches all within close reach. Probably the best location we've had so far - apart from where we are now, 8000 miles from Blighty!

I want to go back please Mr deskie make it happen. Don't forget the quick link to Aberdeen for a bit more civilisation only an hour to the granite city by train. I always found family were put off by the A9 and I never pointed out how easy it is to fly to Inverness or Aberdeen. Some of the best countryside in the UK and you are not that far from Ski resorts in the Highlands only about 45min-1hour providing the roads are clear.
