Odd question, I snapped this Junglie today at Yeovilton and was intrigued to see Tony the Tiger of Frosties fame inscribed on the nose and I wondered to know if there's a story behind it, or if it was simply that someone liked their 'frosted flakes of corn' a bit too much and decided to take it to the next level? :}

It's got the tiger on it as painted because it was until recently part of a "Tiger" team of engineers formed to ascertain why this airframe is continually failing track and vibro test flights. Said engineers have been struggling to resolve the vibration issue and thought it a good idea to paid said creature.

Thanks Jim, it was hovering around one of the pads today and a chap looked as if he was monitoring the tail-rotor with an instrument of some description.

Carson blades and no vibration damper causing issues? I understand that Carson recommend a vibration damper on the rotor head with their blades for the S-61, which the MOD declined to fit to the SK4. Have the Indians ever had any issues with vibe on their 5 blade tail rotors?

The frame involved was using the compass Bay.
It has been painted with the tiger on the front for some time.....

We have a Carson S61 firebombing here in Perth Western Australia. The Carson team swear by (not at) their blades AND the vibration weight assembly atop the head (aka the Seahawk/Blackhawk/S76).

Check the detail on the picture....

This a/c does not have the indian 5 bladed tail rotor, and hence carson blades fitted.

spheroid - Thats the HUMS blade tracker (AOBT) on the aircraft.

Jimma - Spheroid is right - there is a RADS(AT)-RN kit fitted - as well as the HUMS RTB AOBT obviously fitted in the little black box. And yes it is a 6 bladed TRH, therefore 'normal' Mk4, and yes Ox (nice to see you are well - 20 yrs in Sep...), the Bifilar (dual pendulum vibration absorber) and properly tuned battery mounting system that Carson swear by in their S-61's, does work, having flown it, and yes, it would be very nice to get it fitted....

Pontius....its a rusty iron ore ship off NW coast....that we 'arrested'... should have seen the handcuffs!!

Didn't want to be like every one else and line up the H....besides didn't know if the guano or the paint was holding it all together.:}

Fair one, I did some basic counting and some even more basic trig and came up with five blades on the tail rotor, must look again (Or brush up on my trig, I think we know which!). Question on the vibration absorber. . . . I'm given to understand that it weighs a fair bit (well over 1,000lbs fitted). . . does this not eat into the Carson "2,000lbs extra lifting capacity" claim significantly? Not in and of itself an issue if the other benefits of the blades are THAT convincing, but just something I've wondered about in relation to the Carson wundablade.

Yes fitting of Bifalr is possibly a way ahead. It is known fix for S61& Carson MRB but S61 have fixed ( I.E Not the folding type) MRH. ..a immediate read across is not therefore possible
Supply of Bi filar at the same time as fitting Carson MRB may have been an option but was not taken.....IMHO due to cost and weight penalty of fitting it.
This cab did at one time have 5BTR & Carson.
Yes it's fitted with RADS AT and HUMS OBT :hmm:

The Bifilar weighs about 170lb and makes the aircraft 'unnaturally' smooth

Bifilar can fit with the folding MRH - the AW internal Wiki site has a photo of XV370 (the first Avonmouth kit-built Sikorsky SH3-D) showing it with the Bifilar fitted as standard (in 1966!) - shame someone thought best to remove it soon after!
