Vulcan Spotters in the Solent Area

I have just heard, through my ear horn, a young chap on the wireless saying that the mighty Vulcan will be putting in an appearance over Cowes at approx 1825 today. As its Cowes week what better way to celebrate with that fine old bird the Vulcan...............should get a good glimpse from Lee On Solent!!!!!!!!!

Vulcan to the Sky Trust - Avro Vulcan Bomber XH558 - Vulcan Operating Company

It's gone tech so won't be displaying

spamcanner 7th Aug 2008 17:01

Latest news is that 558 will be displaying at Cowes on Friday 8th at 1900.
Leaving Waddo at 1745 and routing via Northampton and Newbury so there's some good news! :)

iansmith 7th Aug 2008 17:31

Excellent news and good to see they are now keeping their website up to date.

staplefordheli 8th Aug 2008 10:20

anyone know where she is now? is she still at brunty and flying up to Waddo or where she will end up after taking off at Waddo as per the TVOC, plan to go up to see her at Waddo tonight but wondered where to go to see her come back!

Exrigger 8th Aug 2008 12:23

She is currently at Waddington and has been operating from here since before the Waddington Airshow.

TEEEJ 8th Aug 2008 12:36

The TVOC forum have XH558 landing at RAF Brize Norton after Cowes. No update as to when she will return to RAF Waddington.

staplefordheli 8th Aug 2008 13:40

thanks for that
will pop over then and watch her takeoff
I cant get on the tvoc forum now as its private

TEEEJ 8th Aug 2008 17:57

XH558 unfortunately went tech again at RAF Waddington.

From TVOC

'Vulcan news flash!
17:15 Friday 8 Aug 2008

Vulcan XH558 which was resheduled to appear at Skandia Cowes Week this evening has unfortunately, due to another technincal problem, been forced to cancel at the last minute.

She was originally scheduled to perform a display last night but a techincal problem forced her cancellation. Then she rescheduled for tonight at 700pm but once again she's had to pull out.'

yes the info finally filtered through at 18:30 as we stood at the end of the runway pereimeter watching the crews prepare her, then depart on a bus! thought they had left it late at 1800 for 1900 display
Being towed off to the hanger when we left
Comms fault we were told we were told but TVOC site mentions nothing now as usual
oh well another day

moony 8th Aug 2008 21:34

orbit downwind

beagle, you are a twit. Flying a PA 28 at silly knots against a Tirstar returning from down-route with troops who wany to be with their loved ones, would you run the risk of having to send the Tristar around? No you wouldn't, but then you have never seen any view apart from your own.

The GPU died whilst 558 was running from it. When the GPU fault was fixed, a whole bunch of fuses were found to be blown on 558. These were replaced, but there was still a problem with power. I assume the power issue was fixed eventually (around 1755ish) but then comms were totally unreadable from the Vulcan on the Waddington ground freq.

I nearly took the bait and was about to leap to BEagle's defence with a rant about the inability of RAF controllers to effectively integrate instrument and circuit traffic. BEagle, however, is more than capable of looking after himself and besides, his reply is bound to be far more entertaining than anything I could manage.

BEagle 9th Aug 2008 06:32

I simply couldn't be ar$ed to rise to the bait! 35 years in the Flying Prevention Branch and he still couldn't cope with mixed traffic without forcing people into incessant orbits.....

Back to the trhread though. If I recall correctly, losing external 200v during pre-flight preparation before the AEO had established aircraft power was a complete pain. The one thing the AEO must NOT do is to ask for external AC again until after landing and shut down checks had been completed. The reason being that the rotating loads would be running down, and re-applying 200v would probably cause main power fuses to blow.

Loss of external power during start was one of the earliest OCU exercises when I did the course some 31 years ago.

Speaking of Solent and Vulcan reminds me of happier days as a young lad walking to school and hearing a noise locked up and saw a Vulcan going form the direction of Pompey to Southampton, aircraft gave a nice big bank towards HMS Daedalus showing off that remarkable wing and paint scheme.

Remember walking to school with a slight spring in my step thinking all was right with the world, RAF in the sky, Navy out there on the Solent etc and God must indeed be in his heaven.

Happy days.

After taking rather a frosty phonecall, OC35 once advised (with rather a grin) one of his captains that the choice of Portland for a Practice Diversion was, perhaps, ' slightly inappropriate'......:D

Gainesy 9th Aug 2008 09:32

Is the V scheduled for the Shoreham RAFA show?

spekesoftly 9th Aug 2008 09:39

According to the TVOC website, Shoreham 30th - 31st August.

Gainesy 9th Aug 2008 11:38

Thank you, Speke.
