Officer Promotion BoardS

Got asked this the other day and it's something I should know (and could get the answer from the Desk Officer) but thought here would get me the answer quicker (;))

When are the promotion boards for Officers ? I know the list comes out 1 July and 1 Jan but how soon before is it done ? What if your OJAR falls just outside one board ? I presume you wait till the next ?

Was comparing it to the USAF system. It's about 95% sucess rate to get to Major at the moment, which I'm sure it's not the same for RAF.

Jumping_Jack 17th May 2008 19:10

It depends what branch and rank you are as to when the board falls.

D-IFF_ident 17th May 2008 23:20

Last one that you would have been 'read' at was, IIRC, November - which means the next one could be about now. You won't get promoted though; you're doing an important job that makes a real difference in the world and won't have had the chance to organise this year's summer ball. I also doubt you were on the Christmas Draw committee?

:ouch:

Flt Lt and Pilot. Default PPRuNe setting (:E)

D-IFF - Doesn't help that the person writing my report is doing it for the first time (;))

FFP -

Look on the brightside mate, if it's his first time writing them, you can always help/advise/assist etc to make sure he gets it right. And remember, things could be worse - you could have my 1RO!

He doesn't believe in individuals building up and maintaining reporting profiles. So each year, he gets his OJAR/SJAR handbook out (yep, the one that came out when OJARs first appeared on the scene), and compares every last letter in the handbook to how he believes you have performed. No lattitude, no scope for variation from the handbook, and no possible way of guiding him to make sure that he doesn't undo several years of hard work in previous reporting periods. In fact, having been in post for the bare minimum time for a report to be written, I did offer to let him have a copy of my last report - something which all my other ROs have asked for when writing reports - only to get a blank look back and a "why would I want that?".

Not sure about the USAF promotion rates, more like .95 success round here :\

Sorry, have i missed something?....People actually still want to be promoted?

See, you have it all wrong..... If you want promoting, no matter what, just learn this phrase, whatever the problem, no matter how large or small or ridiculous or unachivable the task is, or if it will adversly affect your peers or troops.. just say ( all together now)

YES!

:ouch::}

I know one flt lt, real twitter and bistered. He was the first subject of a new sqn ldr. Now this sqn ldr had known the other guy for a good 10 years or more, serving on the same sqn and sometimes the same crew. The sqn ldr was a 'good' bloke (nah), why, on a night on the tiles he had been photographed mooning out of the mini-bus.

The other guy was 'due' for promotion but, IMNSHO, only because he was highly competent at his job and would have been properly rewarded as spec aircrew.

Anyway the 1st RO wrote a very precise and accurate 1369 - probably the only true one that year - and that (I was told) scuppered him for ever.

One tour my couldn't give a sh1t factor was at max. We had a 'flt cdr' spec aircrew sqn ldr, who was only the FC to keep him out of harms way. He wasn't our 1st RO but the sqn cdr, a sqn ldr, got him to draft our 1369s.

Anyway, next year, new sqn cdr, I was called in for my debrief after the report had been sent off.

"That's very interesting Sir, your predecessor said exactly the same thing in exactly the same words."

His face was a picture. He had copied the previous year's report that the lazy FC had just given him :}.

At least that was two other careers that hit the buffers.

Well it's something to do until your next option point comes up and it gives you a good excuse to get away with putting a keg behind the bar without C-in-C Home being able to have a whinge at you.

Plus on a personal level, it would really hack off my old instructor who said I wouldn't even make it past the Careers Office let alone get through trg!

Look on the RAF intranet site at the Manning page and there is a link to when all the prom boards sit. Or just ring your desk officer and ask him!

FFP 20th May 2008 15:18

Thanks Galley,

I don't have access to the RAF intranet site where I am, but thanks for the reply on topic.

If anyone happens to notice Flt Lt Pilot boards, I'd be greatly appreciated.
