Yeah, there's one actually on the old airfield. Drive towards the hangars and follow the signs.

Access is gained by calling one of the phone numbers on the signs. From what I can gather, it's in front of the hangar that has the 5 Sqn crest on it.

Could be the last? 17th Apr 2008 12:09

Skippe'

It is in such a poor state because they did put travellers'/pikeys in the housing, much the same as Finningley. And funny old thing the crime and destruction in the local area went through the roof!:rolleyes:

Even the O's patch is pretty rough......... Still it will cost you in excess of 200k to live there!

harrogate 17th Apr 2008 12:20

And funny old thing the crime and destruction in the local area went through the roof!
Literally.

Some scamps were stripping a roof there on Saturday night.

Harrogate - May I add my congratulations on a stunning shot! As for HDR - I am only just trying to get into this now... I understand the theory of what is needed re photographs, but am having trouble finding info on how to do the editing - do you have any links to websites or books on the subject?

Thanks in advance!

harrogate 17th Apr 2008 17:12

anotherthing...

You're going to need some half-decent software, mate.

I use Photoshop CS3, Photomatix (excellent tool for Tone Mapping) and I tidy up the inevitible 'noise' in my HDRs with Neat Image.

There's a few hundred quid's worth of software there, which I personally can legitimise buying for work purposes, but I've noticed recently that you can download all of the above for free as bit torrents, if that's your thing. I won't tell.

There's a really useful tutorial on HDR and post-production in April's Digital Camera magazine, but the new edition's out now so not sure how you'd get it. It also refers directly to Photomatix and Photoshop CS3, so you'd need those packages if the article's gonna be of any real use to you.

I'll gladly scan the article and email it to you if you send me a PM.

Harrogate,

Thanks - I've Pmd you :ok:

but am having trouble finding info on how to do the editing
anotherthing,
The article here gives a brief overview of the process with an example. It is a bit skimpy on the actual detail of the various element processes but it does make a good introduction.
Even the name of the forum itself is worth a look, should get the webstapo a bit agitated :E

Vox Populi 18th Apr 2008 12:28

I was going to call the shot 'Last on the line", but I also like the suggestion of 'Still on guard', so I'm undecided as yet. I like the way the aircraft is sat in the cooler looking area, gazing up to the warm sunset. She probably misses being up there.
I was thinking "Welcome to the Royal Air Force - Please Give Generously".

Weak satire aside, highly emotive picture.

Digital photography

Harrogate,

May I add my congratulations on a fantastic picture and also offer up to Alan Sundry that Adobe Lightroom is a very good piece of software that is designed specifically for digital.

Version 2 is out as 'Beta' now so anybody can download a trial version foc as it's a cheap way for Adobe to get user feedback early in the design process.

I've been using Version 1 for a while and am very pleased with it. £130 or as near as but I would recommend downloading the trial from the Adobe website.

Regards,

Eagle402

Having never been to Binbrook, can somebody please tell me if XR724 was a live jet, that has literally been left to rot on the line or if it was a gateguard ?
XR724 is owned by the lightning association and was flown back to Binbrook in 92.

Details here: http://www.lightning.org.uk/assninfo.html

Most recent details on her status: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/sho...ighlight=xr724

A superb image harrogate.

BEagle 20th Apr 2008 13:45

I was thinking of various titles:
"Still on guard"

"Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away"

"The thanks of a grateful nation"
But settled on
"Blair's Britain"

cazatou 20th Apr 2008 14:07

Credit where credit is due.

It has always been Gordon who has held the purse strings.

ZH875 20th Apr 2008 16:11

But as Binbrook closed in 1988, then the caption should be:

'Maggies Mistake'

The closure of Binbrook was under a Conservative government 1979-1997.

Wow!!!!

:ok:

Thank you H!! What a pic. First tour in the RAF, worked in the Tower from 83-86. Can still see Dutch F-5's beating up the airfield and looking down at them from Local as they blow through the ASP; 'Feel's' last trip, 4v4 Lightnings/Harrier GR3s, the 4 GR3s each with an F6 on it's tail in an airfield attack; Red Dog putting shark's teeth on 3 jet during APC and the rumours that started back at base, until Shark formation joined the circuit to silence the unbelievers.....

Happy, happy days.

Cheers

Tandemrotor 20th Apr 2008 19:54

Fabulous photo. Thank you

I know this is utterly unoriginal, and perhaps not entirely appropriate, but the picture made me think of this:

High Flight

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God."

harrogate 21st Apr 2008 08:31

Thanks chaps.

I've got some time on my hands early this week, so for all the folks who've asked for the scanned item, I'll sort it very soon.

I'll also post a high res version of the image, with a link to a charity donation webpage which I won't make compulsory, but all donations gratefully received.

mystic_meg 24th Apr 2008 14:04

slight thread creep....

..does anyone remember the (in)famous tannoy announcements that were made by the GD Cpl from the Guardroom? ISTR he had a Geordie accent, and listening to the various tannoys was a sure way to brighten up a dull day!

Tigs2 24th Apr 2008 19:21

Do you remember how many exercises we used to have in the early 80's? Mystic, who was the fairy chief we used to have in MSF called 'Stan ???, and where did the Rooney fella go?

On_The_Top_Bunk 24th Apr 2008 22:33

"Fool on the Hill" played on national radio dedicated to the Staish for those lovely call outs. Asked for by one of the Squadron lineys.

Wasn't it 26 in 1 year "no notice" call outs?

Acker 24th Apr 2008 23:24

A beatiful and evocative photograph. Kudos to the artist.

A point or an observation if you like, do any of the more romantic posters who criticize political leaders past and present ever wonder what our national air threats are now?

How many Lighting, Phantoms, Typhoons do we need now?

Who is the air threat to the UK now?

I know that this is an emotive and subjective subject.

But sometimes I wonder where the sense of perspective has gone.

There are no fleets of Migs and Sukhoi's threatening our sky's any more.

taxydual 25th Apr 2008 06:27

Acker,

They don't give up easily.

'Feel's' last trip...

...can you elaborate please? Sounds interesting ;)

seac 25th Apr 2008 17:50

The Staish's surname led to Binbrook personnel being known as "Cowleys Commandos"

That is one stunning picture! Bloody well done:ok:!
I spent many a teenage hour in the sixties watching Lightnings doing their stuff across the river at Leconfield and can still hear and almost feel the noise.Magnificent! Then used to pop down to Binbrook when I returned to the area in the eighties, just to take me back in time!

Totally agree with all others congratulating you on a stunning photo. I would also like a Hi Res version and think the idea of a donation to a charity is a great idea and I will certainly contribute. How about the ' Help for Heroes' campaign set up for our injured servicemen and women with the aim of improving the facilities at Headley Court?

Mike7777777 27th Apr 2008 22:18

Excellent photo, was XR728 visible? I assume it's undercover in one of the buildings (or am I getting my XRs mixed up?)

Didntdoit 27th Apr 2008 22:28

Active Edge

You know, there were so many exercises, the Facists even called an Active Edge on the night of my Leaving do at the Rugby Club. Fortunately, I had the good sense to book leave: I headed for Block 7 in me toga, and everyone else headed the other way in DPM :{:{:{

A minor muddle Mike.

XR728 lives with the Lighting Preservation Group at Bruntingthorpe. Still very visible: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/sho....php?p=1243498

This Wednesday, 30/4 marks the 20th anniversary of 11 Sqn standing down on the Lightning at Binbrook.

Apologies for not fulfilling any of my early promises on this thread.

I've been stacked with work this week, but I WILL post a link to a hi-res version of the photo, I WILL scan the HDR article I mentioned and I WILL reply to the maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany PMs I've received.

Apologies, bear with me, hold the line, hang in there, etc, etc...

Hi.

Apologies for the delay with this - been waiting for my chum to give me access to his Flickr account again.

I'm not familiar with Flickr, so try this for size and let me know if it's OK:

Binbrook - take your pick from the sizes at the top

Regarding charity donations for use of the image, it's completely up to you. However, if you do wish to make a donation, then please consider this small charity which is of very personal siginifcance to me...

JustGiving

To help us keep a rough track of where our donations are coming from on the JustGiving web page, please can you just put 'For photograph 1' in the comments section, when prompted.

Feel free to see how you get on with the image (printing, etc) before donating. PM me here if you've got any probs - please don't send messages to the Flickr account, although comments underneath the pic on Flickr are always welcome.

PS - the promised scanned article is on its way soon too.

Smashing.

Polikarpov 1st May 2008 22:31

Thanks very much Harrogate,

Seeing that image again at a larger scale makes one notice the remarkable way the clouds have formed themselves as to frame the top of the tail so (unless there's some jiggery-pokery going on there; beautiful, in any regard!)

:ok:

harrogate 1st May 2008 22:38

It's just a bit of haloing. It's an undesirable side effect you get when creating an HDR image, but I quite liked how it looked here so I left it alone.

Like you say, it gives a nice framing effect.

harrogate 2nd May 2008 11:35

PS - if anyone has trouble downloading the hi res version from Flickr, please send me a PM.
