I know this has been tried before, but does anyone out there have an RAF Greatcoat, size 42 - 44 available for sale?? Please PM me if you are willing to sell to serving RAF Officer.

Either way, there's quite a few on there.

You may want to try telephoning the supply store at Cranditz. I bought one from them a year ago as they were clearing out 100s of them then. Another 20 pounds to re-taylor it at Snaiths and I was all sorted out...

Never worn it since though! PM me with a price...

Is Ernie Bedford, military tailor and gentlemen's outfitter of Newark, still bumping around? I snapped up a greatcoat from him, cheap as chips, yonks ago. You see them occasionally in the back of the RAF News too!

Sadly no. Can't imagine how old he would be if he was. Well into 3 figures I imagine.

A sad loss. My first experience of a proper gentlemen's tailor - I remember being completely bewildered by such hitherto alien concepts as courtesy and service!

I bought my first mess kit from Ernie Bedford back in 1969 when flying training at Syerston. Sometime around 1982 I went back and bought another one from him. (The first one seemed to have shrunk - especially round the waist). Anyway, I asked him if he gave discount to regular customers. ..He had the good grace to smile at my joke.

Are we still allowed to wear, was it, the Crombie Warm? Not quite as long as the great coat, no belt and IMHO slightly smarter than the GC.

... we must have been there at about the same time - that's where and when I bought my first one too. The label inside said "RE City 1958" and it was in regular use until '99, when I finally got a mortgage for a new one! Still fits (-ish) and occasionally gets use if it looks like the going will be rough! (the jacket that is - trousers and waiscoat(s) died many years since.......:()

Wore mine once in 16 years. Took about a fortnight before my shoulders got level again.

I still have mine made by R E City Ltd of London. It also has a label saying it is a Crombie made to Air Ministry Standard. I rarely wore it because for most of my life it has weighed more than me.

Looking for one for someone 6ft3 and 48in chest (me). Needs to be officer pattern as will be worn as uniform.

Apparently the current uniform regs allow for it to be worn with No 1, 2 or 5 dress but only issued on loan for ceremonial occasions.

Any ideas? e-bay usually poor for these, especially when you combine the size and rank. Most are NCO design and flogged to Torchwood fans!

I would agree with you about him wearing a Gp Capt's coat (or at least a coat ranked to G/C) but most of the ones on e-bay claiming to be Torchwood coats have Albatrosses on the sleeve, a suspicious sign of non-officer design!

I have never watched Torchwood (not my sort of thing) but it seems to have significantly affected the availability and price of second hand greatcoats!
