Pay/Retention Bonus/QFI Pay
 

I heard that a 'QFI additional pay' rumour was circulating. Does anyone have solid information about this or other upcoming financial incentives to retain experianced RAF aircrew? Currently considering if my future lies within the RAF or pastures new.

Wasn't some sort of 'major qualification' pay, for which I think QFI would have qualified, supposed to be part of pay 2000?

Pilots are paid well below market value.
Most of the rest of the Air Force are overpaid for what they do in comparison to their civvy counterparts.

Ahhh yes the whine of the common bluntie........yes well........i think you may find people with the qualities required to do such a job in the air force (or navy or army..) don’t exactly grow on trees.

I think you may find that flying pay is actually what you may call professional pay, i.e. being paid for a certain skill-set that is difficult or expensive to attain in a similar fashion to any doctor, dentist or lawyer.

I think you may find that in certain circles people are getting pi :mad:ed off with working 12 hour days whilst the rest of the air force works 9 to 5 with a convenient one hour lunch break. (Guys and girls out of areas excluded in this rant, although war pay is a joke!)

I think you may find that having spent up to 9 hours in a sweaty cockpit urinating into a poly bag and flying at 100ft over desert whilst at 500 knots (and the rotary and multi boys that regularly fly in the threat zone) people feel justifiably pleased to get flying pay.

Bottom line if you were in a pilot’s shoes you would want flying pay too, because you would feel that you deserve it, and in an air force where people are increasingly voting with their feet, if you want to keep them in, you need to give them the incentive to stay, because believe me the love of the job just doesn’t cut it anymore.

If you want to do the job be my guest, oh wait a minute.......you can’t.......keep whinging and enjoy your lunch :ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh:

back to the matter at hand eh mate? Flying pay is a bonus paid to individuals that have achieved a professional qualification. I guess from your bitter and rather defensive tone that you feeling a bit sore maybe even jealous………….hit a raw nerve have I

Pay is probably the last thing on anybody’s mind when they apply to OASC. I just wanted to fly fast jets and see how many women I could boff in one night!!

The airlines do pay much more, tie that in with the fact that people get to spend more time at home with the family = unhappy aircrew leaving for pastures new.

Flying pay and retention bonuses are not a privilege it’s a necessity..

Tecchies do a great job in the RAF and will bend over backwards to get the airframe serviceable and on the next day's program and they are reasonably well payed to pot.

The majority of trades and branches in the RAF will also work equally as hard in support of Ops except maybe stackers and coppers but hey nuff said about that. A pilot friend once said:

'if you line up the rest of the airforce against a wall and shot between 10 and 15 a year - he wouldnt mind them getting extra pay'

All getting very silly folks, let us just remember that flying pay is paid because the MoD is too tight to put the aircrew on a seperate, higher, pay scale (like doctors etc) because they would get hammered by increased pensions.

Aircrew get paid more because their skills attract more money outside (same as doctors etc); hence you have to pay a reasonable proportion of what they could earn outside to keep them in - end of story.

While we in ground trades might not like the fact that someone else gets paid more, we should be realistic about the opportunites to earn outside. The MoD's problem is that now many of us can earn as much if not more than we presently do outside the Forces and the factors pulling us from our careers are increasing.

This is not about the difference between aircrew and bluntie pay, it is about how MoD intends to keep enough personnel within the Services to keep the Ops establishments fed. There are significant problems in certain areas already and precious little sign of anyone sorting it out, but to get back to the gist of the thread, I owuld expect far more of this focussed type of rewards scheme for key personnel. Clearly it is a kneejerk, but until there is a real personnel strategy, that is all they can do...

Let's say that Flying Pay was (A + B)F, where A+B = 120% and F is the current rate. If you allow everyone Rate A (say 90%) and Rate B is available in dribs and drabs for additional qualifications (QFI BI, A2 and A1 increment, IRE increment, QWI increment, EWO, Auth, Air test....etc etc) up to 30%, arguably you would reward those who provide the most value.

BUT:

1. Would you take them back to 0.9F when posted, on a ground tour etc?
2. Could you trust JPA not to ar$e the whole thing up?

When I left, my pay was about half what my civil counterpart would have received for doing the same peacetime tasks, let alone anything for OOA.

I have never understood why people join the RAF for anything else than flying. Maybe it is just me! I know I'll join the RAF as a supply officer......wtf?
