It happens in the RAF too.

A female supply Sgt I used to work with had a breast enlargement done through the RAF. Cracking job it was too.

Of course with a little joined up thinking we could probably have re-used some of the tits at HQSTC rather than buying implants externally.;)

It certainly sounds like one of the most 'creative' uses of taxpayers' money by a government organisation!
I'd have thought that if someone had such insecurities about their body they couldn't function effectively in their job, they'd either not be accepted in the forces in the first place, or out pretty quickly.

Those very 1970's leadership skills are just what we are trying, but it would seem often in vain, to get rid off. Not valuing our folk, which is what you are implying is why we are in the shabby state we are in today, and 4 grand, in the big scheme of things is a pittance to pay to to ensure a chap/chapess can bring their best to the party, no pun intended :rolleyes:

It's not a "70's leadership" issue. By your argument I can sign up for a few years in with no other intent or commitment than to get my titties enlarged which I can't get any other job good enough to be able to afford. People like you will protect my "right" to do that by making sure that it is as difficult as possible to terminate me because it would "infringe upon my rights"... Then, as soon as I have pretty titties I can get out...

That is nothing more than socialist claptrap and is a poor reflection on someone who claims to have spent 30 years taking Her Majesty's "shilling" and seems to think he is smart at the same time. You can have one or the other, but with that kind of thinking you can't have both...

Seldom, I also think people should be valued to help keep them in, and retention bonuses, pay rises, conditions of service improvements are all legitimate ways to try and do that.
This, though, is a different matter. People are all different shapes and sizes and often have issues with body image, with or without sensible grounds.

A: It doesn't, unless they're at the opposite end of the scale and give her back pain or make it uncomfortable to exercise.

Q: How did the breast size issue become a problem in the workplace? Was it people teasing the women about it? If so, that's a harrassment matter, and should be dealt with as such.

Cosmetic surgery is fine if you want it, but unless it's a medical necessity to have it done, it's not a legitimate use of taxpayer's money, in my view. I know plenty of people who think they're not as physically attractive as they'd like to be, but it doesn't affect how they do their jobs.

If these women have problems with their breast size, then well and good, let them go and pay for their own enlargement. If they have gotten into the defence force and successfully completed training courses and worked operationally as they are, how is it a defence or taxpayer problem to deal with body image issues?
I don't particularly like the way my ears stick out and have been teased about it on occasion, but I'd never have dreamed of trying to hit the defence force for a cosmetic operation to fix it while I was in.

It sounds to me like they know a sympathetic psych and have hit him or her up for a letter of recommendation to use in support of an application for the procedure (something they want but don't really need) to be done on the taxpayer's dollar.

Can the RAN ask for them back when she leaves?:E

We had the exact samething happen in the RN in the 90's. A bloody good whinge about self confidence was all it took, next thing, free boob op.

I remember one young 'lady' having it done, and then as soon as she was back from Haslar, she rejoined the ships company and spent the rest of the 10 day jolly in Hania getting them out for a feel and a squeeze for anyone who was interested. Not lacking self confidence any more it seemed:}

I'd have thought that the 4 grand spent would do more to raise everyone else's morale (at least those that are thoroughly red blooded);)

I was posted to Nowra in 97 and there was a Wren who had a job done on the company then, so not exactly a new thing. Very nice they were too!

My initial reaction was one of indignation until I realised that my ex (WRAF officer) had her nose done in an RAF hospital. I guess the same principle holds - if prominent probiscii are OK then why not pay for some wooly- jumper-outer-shapers?

I remember a certain well (very) endowed loadmisstress on 30 Sqn who actually had hers made smaller on the company!
I also seem to remember that we all wore black armbands that day.

At least the RAN will get some return on its investment, not like the delightful young lady (I am told) who had training as a pole dancer on Betty's pay role.

She did claim that she had since "performed" for a number of senior serving officers, so she's had some positive impact on morale, surely? :E
