RAF NC Aircrew
Hi guys
I'm looking for some straight up information, preferably from a current Weapon Systems Operator, about the role. If you're willing to assist please PM me. Before anyone says it, yes I have tried the search function and no I haven't found what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance. PR |
I'm just trying to find the answers to a few questions before taking up the time of an AFCO.
Some of my questions are: 1 - What does the role of WSOp Crewman involve? (Info on RAF careers website quite brief and general) 2 - What is the length of the training period? 3 - What sort of salary can I expect during training? 4 - How often are you sent away on deployment and for how long? Most of these wouldn't have bothered me 10 years ago but I have a wife and daughter to consider now and have to make sure I am armed with the facts before making a decision that will affect their lives too. I am also asking here because it has been suggested by a matelow friend of mine that the AFCO may not be entirely truthful. Thanks PR |
Your questions seem to indicate to me that this job is probably not for you!! AFCOs don't deliberately lie...they just don't know.

Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted..

Good Mickey
Am I to infer from your post that you are a WSOP? Would you mind expanding on your previous comment as to why you think the job would be unsuitable for me? PR |
Well - Google tells me:
A bit about some of the time in training Pretty informative 'webchat' from the archive from a Master Aircrew Seems a reasonable start - with a phone number too If you think people in uniform are not telling the truth, perhaps the conspiracy theory isn't such a theory after all :suspect: |
Thanks for the info Mr C Hinecap, very useful. :ok:
I haven't spoken to the AFCO yet so I don't know what they are going to say but I'd rather be in possession of the facts from someone with first hand experience than sitting there clueless when I do. Forewarned is forearmed as they say! |
I think your "matelow friend" knows cock-all.
|
"AFCOs don't deliberately lie...they just don't know"
Good mickey thats the funniest thing I have heard this year:D:D |
A bold statement, talk shy t, but that's your opinion.
His comments about the AFCO are based on his experience of them and if that's his opinion it's just as valid as yours. |
Hence the prefix "I think".
However, just for you; AL1 - IMHO I think your "matelow friend" knows cock-all. Any better? |
I'm interested in this WSO info too. I wouldn't care about the EXACT details too much, but PMR is right to be concerned about his family.
PMR, if you find anything interesting (any small detail that the RAF "forget" to mention), please don't hezitate to post it here! Cheers |
Hallelujah it's a record, 13 posts and not one mention of a spelling mistake, are all of the dictionary Nazi's on leave :p
|
Hehe, you must by very perceptive talk shy, you've never met the guy and yet you already seem to know what I have been telling him for nearly 20 years.:E
Do you work in an AFCO by any chance? |

Hallelujah it's a record, 13 posts and not one mention of a spelling mistake, are all of the dictionary Nazi's on leave Is that another load of paperclips I hear arriving? I'll get my coat. |
Seldom available for work...:ok:
You forgot the question mark at the end also. No Mover bites yet:= Later; MOG:cool: |
PMR if you are concerned about the time away from your young family then I wouldn't even consider joining up as a crewman or any of the Wsop cadre.
Why? because getting shot at regurlarly in a sandy, dusty ****hole for the next 12 years wouldn't be that inviting to me with a new and young family to look after. Even if you take away the danger factor, you will spend on average at least four or five months OOA (dusty dump) every year! That may not bother you and the excitement of being in a hostile environment may be what you are after:ok:, if it's not then I suggest look elsewhere. |
NCA Brief
027PMR,
Ask your AFCO about the NCA brief with 55(R) at Cranwell. It takes place on the last Thursday of every month and would be worth going to. Yoof. |
