Interesting huh, does anyone have that presentation?, is it restricted or can anyone say the context in which this picture was used?. Just by looking at the picture you have to admit the B-2 looks pretty clever in the IR department. Cheers |
Very even IR profile it has to be said! Albeit from below, but then that's where most of the IR threat is from...

Am sure this is part of the footage of BWOS' Rapier FSC unit tracking the B-2 at Farnborough back in 1996 when the system was first introduced. Bit of a non event really. It was optically tracked.

Deary me.. IMHO its a bit cheeky using Rapier FCS vision in a fighter presentation, but I should wait till I read the presentation and the context

Yep, 100% Rapier footage. Since it was taken - as has previously been pointed out - while the B2 was flying at about 500 feet down the Farnborough runway about half a mile from the Fire Unit it isn't perhaps the most convincing demonstration of counter-stealth technology, and to my knowledge nobody who knows what they are talking about has ever claimed it to be such. Still, nobody talks up a piece of kit like the man trying to sell it to you!

I've since read the paper, its seems reasonable in the context it was used, I've asked if i can post the link to it and will do if I get the OK, so you can all have a look at the public presentations to Norway for JSF Gripen and Typhoon, some interesting tidbits.

The IRST issue is an interesting one. I don't think anyone has quoted an official, unclassified range for any IRST, which in any event would need to be qualified for target size and thermal signature - which is affected by speed, altitude and propulsion mode - not to mention altitude and weather. There are also IR suppressive coatings and (at least in theory) the ability to cool things. However, IRST has presumably improved with time (physics not, processing yes) and has its advantages.

Presume the F-15's that escorted the B2 at Fairford were there to mess up the IR and radar signature of the bomber, should any interested party be trying to draw a bead on the beast?

Page 52 of the Eurofighter pdf, is its fuel fraction and wing loading better than the F-22 and the JSF?.

It all depends on the conditions, and its also been said the Pirate system has picked up Venus:), so range is rather dependent on the objects tempreture and its background context. Are there any public domain pictures taken from a pirate sensor? |
