Anyone Identify this aircraft?
Go to Google earth co-ord 12 49' 32 N 45 01' 47E
Can't see any engines..., so could be the biggest glider ever!!!! Notwithstanding the German efforts during WW2... ...., and a walk down memory lane for all those who had to suffer this shi**y sand-pit - it was normally a 13 month unaccompanied..., or two year tour for unmarried souls..., with 30 days R&R after the first 13 months..., not as active as some of the current sand-pits of today..., but it had it's moments...!!! GengisKhant:ok: |
An-12 sans engines? Or Il-18 ditto?
|
If my map reading memory serves me this looks like old Khormaksar and, given Yemen's connections with USSR I'd guess something from there and minus the engines. I think I can see a nacelle on the stbd wing but can't be sure. An old IL18 perhaps? Stands by for mocking laughter!

.
Il-18 without engines?? Just a guess
|
or an optical ilyushin?
|
Easy - Ilyushin 18V, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, Registration: LZ-BEP.
http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=19840616-0 :) |
It's an An-12 - perhaps this one: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?i...ext_id=0221899
I put an overlay over it and it fits - without engines - would post it if I could post pictures. |
All..., many thanks..., thought it was some form of ex Russian a/c, but couldn't place it.
FORGET..., thanks..., never ceases to amaze me how much information is out there ...., if you know where to look!!! DALLAS..., I wouldn't worry about posting photos..., lots of us can't do it either!!! |
Hmmm, only problem is, I got the wrong airport. Far East man myself, Tengah, Butterworth; that sort of thing.
|
Gengis - "30 days R&R" ???? I wish:mad: 2 years 7 weeks straight, NO R&R, NO anything, really other than sand, humidity, discomfort. Even a request for compassionate return to UK for my Dad's funeral refused because I was "the youngest son" (big brother was in the UK).
Not at all sure how those conditions would go down with today's 19 - 21 year olds. The things which seem to bug the present day military are, no doubt, a matter of irritation and concern but 't'was ever thus - "if you can't take a (bad) joke you shouldn't have joined";) ;) ;) |
An-12 sans engines? Or Il-18 ditto? |
Is Antonov An-12. Capitalist saboteurs steal engines, probably for projekt A400M .
|
Aden R&R
Gengis,
Some of us had the pleasure of a free flight to/from Kenya after 13months :) All the way to Nairobi in an Argosy aka Whistlin' wheelbarrow. Returning by East African Airways Comet 4. Holiday at 'SilverSands' families camp on the coast near Mombasa. Quite splendid. |
Il-18 derilect in Africa
Here is a photograph of an Ilyushin Il-18 without engines in Africa.

Gengis, How the devil etc etc etc
Good to see you on here not insulting a pointlessly self-important failed FTE cum Test Pilot (emphasis on the cum!!). I think it's a microlight, I saw a great presentation on its handling qualities at every conference I've ever been to. Don't forget I'm visiting in May. Affirmatron. |
Antonov. An-12 Cub
You can see an Iraqi An-12 being destroyed by an airstrike at the following link. http://www.blackburn-buccaneer.co.uk...missions.html? |
Khormaksar
While taking of Khormaksar, can anyone pin point the officers' mess and the Merryfield Hotel (the one on base)? Also the main dispersal where Vulcans would have been parked. I think it was 12 49.5N 45 01E.
Also Steamer Point and Tarshine (?) beach. |
Or these two, on the other side of the airfield, at:
12°49'59.95"N 45° 1'47.10"E |
And a little to the west....
... like about 400m? .... is an engine-less Hercules - sorry, haven't got the co-ords right now (on other PC).
Low Obs Cunningly clever these Europeans, they scour the world for projekt A400M! S41 |
