Iraqi Freedom images from August

I spent some time with the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing in August, as the article has been published in a aviation mag I thought I would post a few shots that didn't make it into the article.
335th FS from Seymour Johnson.
31 Squadron
VAQ-209
115 FW/Wisconsin ANG
23rd FS from Spangdahlem
763rd ERS

So, these are Neil's then?

Love that last shot of the RC-135... Looks like it's had it's fair share of clumsy boom operators in its time. Clang!

Interesting that the US aircraft are still loaded up for air to air (AIM 9 & 120), while the GR4 has none. Can't afford to keep flying with missiles?

Hot & high in a GR4...

Take only what you need!

MightyGem 23rd Nov 2006 16:24

the GR4
Ahhh...thanks for that. I was thinking they were all US aircraft and could't figure out what it was.

Always thought the GR looked like an F-4 and a MiG-23 had one drunken Saturday night together............

Ah, but she took the best of both her parents' looks! (But then again, I am biased!)

What is the kit on the inside of the tank pylons on the GR4. Looks a bit like AIM9 but I cannot see any guidance fins.

It's the SRAAM launcher.

Wardie, what do you think they reaally are????

wardie 24th Nov 2006 01:26

I'm not sure. From the pic I was guessing that it was either the AIM 9 pylon or the whole thing.

Remember my background is Avionics G/C on Aussie Hercs. The most offensive piece of kit they had was the Elsan dunny down the back.

It's the BOL launcher rail - basically just a Sidewinder/ASRAAM launcher rail with integrated chaff dispenser. The bulged nose contains the nitrogen bottle for cooling the seeker head of the missiles.

Has anyone copyrighted these pics?

Thatch 24th Nov 2006 15:13

You wouldn't believe how many p****ks copy the images and claim they are their own or just use them without permission.
