Movements Operator (RAF)
 

Hi all,

I've been thinking of joing the RAF for a while now and have found a trade that looks interesting! I just want any info from any current movement operators or anyone that knows a movements operator!

What is the job really like? I know it's gonna be hard work and Im ready for that, but I want to make sure that this is the right trade for me!

I figured at nearly 20 I was probably kidding myself about becoming a pilot! Theres not a lot of time! I do hope to save up through the RAF and do my ATPL when I come out, so all is not lost!

So, let's get this right Sainty. You're just finishing off your PPL, you want to be a flying instructor, but not sure whether to do it in the UK or USA. You're currently joining RAF as a loadmaster, but you're also interested in becoming a blanket stacker.

Movement controllers are not blanket stackers!!!

A movement controller is something you might become if you fail the Supplier entry requirements (ability to count without using fingers, thumbs or toes) and become a muppet (Mover). Of course you'll only get to be a movement controller if you manage to get promoted which generally involves not driving aircraft loaders or forklifts into the side of a/c engines/fuselage/etc.

I'm not criticising a movements operator one bit but I would love to know what you find interesting about this role, for me it looks like the most boring and uneventful role you could go for, you do realise there are many other roles which don't need qualifications.

First of all Safety_Helmut I dont think I ever said I definatly want to be a flying instructor I was just exploring that as one possibility!

I'm 19 years old and have my whole life ahead of me and am exploring different options right now instead of diving in and regretting it later!

I dont want a job sitting in an office form 9-5 punching numbers into computers, I want a career and I want to see the world and to me the RAF looks like a good way of doing both!

JAG3 ok i've got very little qualifications 1 GCSE C grade in English and a bunch of D's! What in your opinion is a decent trade in the RAF? I want a trade that is interesting involves aircraft and a more hands on job!

RAF Policeman...Hands on Job...Barriers or Dogs...your choice.:ok:

Then if you are lucky enough to get ATSY...you can fly in aeroplanes, do sod-all work and get to bitch & moan about the crew too...and you can bubble them for having an extra Babycham too many in the bar!!!:mad:

Ok thanks JAG3 i've just had a look at those trades in the careers book and they look ok!

Whats the RAF Police like? I've heard that it's a boring job and nobody likes them!?

I would personally stay away from Police but of course its your own choice. It looks like you maybe need to sit down and have a good think about some roles because your easily being influenced by me and some others.:ok:

Obviously being an expert you can dole out adivce on RAF Careers. Oh hang on you are not an expert. You are still struggling to join the Royal Air Force. You cant even make up your mind, what you want to do. You have a go at anybody who asks for advice. Let them make up their own minds and you just get on with what you want to do.:ooh:

Sainty as a Movements Operator you will certainly see the world and work hard loading aircraft. Speak to the AFCO and make up your own mind.:confused:

Don't listen to the nasty men! You may find rafmovs.com a more useful site to pose you question. Despite what is said here, the Mov Ops I know enjoy their jobs and you're probably better asking them for a more constructive view.

Sound advice from Ratty however just a consideration before you make your choice.............there is already a thread running on here called "Why nobody likes the RAF Police"........... you could substitute RAF Police for RAF Movers and still have just as many replies:E

I hope we can be of help. Trusting your contributions so far - which seem genuine enough - you are taking a sensible approach to your career choices. My advice for you at the moment:

First: STOP, STOP, STOP. Don't rush into commiting yourself to anything. You are, as you correctly point out, young.

Second: Have a look at the "The truth about RAF flying thread". There you will find Gareth, who allegedly has A* at GCSE, writing some ill-composed nonsense and getting stick for it.

Third: See that you are far too smart to jump into anything just yet.

Next: Take all advice with a pinch of salt.

Then: Seriously consider getting your head down for some concerted study at your local college. Get the quals you were given a smart, inquisitive mind for and keep up your outside interests. ie. get busy with your life.

...in terms of gaining qualifications, you have plenty of time.... a whole life's worth! - why waste it?

Get qualified, then... take your skills to the best employer for the job you want to do - be it tavelling the world professionally, or making millions in the City. You get a fair whack as a GP nowadays. Whatever floats your boat. Most here would recommend pilot!!

If you then decide to become a mover, bloody good luck to you. You'll still have time to do that and another career at least. Using the above method, you will have the option to do that, or anything else you want.

You can,, of course study within the RAF as a mover or any other branch of course, but you may find it hard to study and work. There may be limits on your career options once committed.

You don't have to listen to any of this, of course.:)

Ratty, I think its my own free will to post advice to others from my own personal opinions and it was personal opinions which I gave which is stated when I said ''I would personally stay away from Police '' and I also made it clear that he needs to make up his OWN mind which is why I said ''but of course its your own choice.''

Another point is that I'm not struggling to join the RAF mainly because I haven't even posted an application for it yet because I am still to young to go for officer, oh and I can make up my own mind which is why I already have my set 4 preferences.

Ratty I would like you to post again on this thread with your reply because you keep immaturely try to cause an arguement then bottle out of it when I post and show how you were defeated in the arguement, why don't you ''just get on with what you want to do.''
