Military helicoper activity at Cranfield

Here in deepest Bedfordshire we are often treated to the sight of the heavy mob from Odiham - Chinook, Puma and, now and then, a Merlin - sometimes an almost daily occurrence, Sundays included. The routine seems always to be a slow, controlled approach. What must they practice at Cranfield that can't be done at base? Or, bearing in mind the nature of Cranfield's research facilities, is it a need-to-know scenario?

Information is dispensed on a 'need to know' basis : If you need to know, you can be sure you'll be the last to know ;)

Cranfield is slightly unusual in the area in that it offers no radar service and as such is procedural only. Rotary crews go there to practice it.
