That depends on the current status of the Varyag.

India also has a 40K ton class STOBAR carrier under construction in the Cochin shipyard, (designed by Fincantieri and due for delivery in 2012), planned to operate Mig-29Ks. I am sure they would be happy to build a couple more to amortise costs....

Varyag, but whether PLAN would wish to part with the asset without replacement is moot.

The Indian ADS has been in gestation for over 15 years - its always possible that they could build others, but even mods for AN use would knock it back a few years.

Varyag is an engineless hulk that was left open to the atmosphere for a decade. She is little more than an engineering technology demonstrator for the Chinese. Lets face in a hot war, the Chinese navy would become target practice for US SSNs.

Tend to agree with you NEye, but they are certainly doing something with the ship at the minute. As you say though, one suspects in a warfighting situation a salvo of ADCAP would be the end result.

For anyone interested, this is what happened to the last South American Carrier to go out of service, ex HMS Vengeance, ex Minas Gerais of the Brazilian navy. There was a half-@rsed attempt to save her (the last RN carrier afloat to have served in WW2 - albeit briefly), but as you can see it came to naught. Hope the equivalent doesn't happen to XH558.

Not really my area of expertise, but given the same number of combatants on each side in a UK v. Argentina match, I know where my money gets placed. And if wouldn't be in pesos!

I think one Astute with a full loadout of Spearfish would sink the lot very quickly. There are SSNs and there are targets and Spearfish can seriously ruin your day. On the other side of the coin, I would have no problem in imagining that a war equipped CVF carrier battle group could strike the islands and the mainland at the same time and still leave a credible CAP to protect the fleet. Type 45 would turn the low level ops of 1982 into one way trips. The Argentines know it and this is why they are sabre rattling again while we are relatively weak.

The SuE is being phased out of service with the French Navy because it is obsolete. That capability is being replaced and improved upon by the Rafale. Argentina is unlikely to buy the Rafale.

The US have sunk Iwo Jima class ships with a single MK 48 ADCAP on SINKEX.

This mean 3 singles Mk-48 could sink the 3 british CVS,plus one for the Ocean:} :} :} :} :}

And you, sir, need to get a clue. Tactical aircraft callsigns, in this case, the ficticious Argie 01, have very little to do with aircraft side numbers, in this case 07. Otherwise, it would be much easier to determine the order of battle of one's opponent.
