JAR Class 1 Medical AMEs

Can anyone advise me on where to find a list of specific RAF Station Medical Officers that are qualified to carry out a JAR Class 1 Medical so to gain a fATPL? There don't appear to be any listed on the CAA website and wonder if anyone has used or had one done recently.
Many thanks
Onelife

I believe that there's one at Brize.

Are you a QSP? Because unless things have changed, RAF AMEs are only permitted to conduct initial Class 1 medicals for pilots.

Class 1 Medicals

Try the Med Centre at Lyneham, there's a couple of Docs there who are qualified.:)

The initial Class 1 medical can only be taken at the CAA Medical Centre at Gatwick. Renewals can be done by an AME but not all are authorised to renew Class 1 medicals. There's an AME at Wittering - don't know what he/she does.

Freebird,

You can do Initials with a service Doc. I did mine 6 months ago.

Onelife,

Try Brize, there is a female Doc there that did mine. It cost about £80.

Class 1 initial

Hi all

I don't think AME's can issue Class 1 initial, i tried at lyn had to go to LGW. The SMO could only renew. Even then the SMO and Doc Russell are the only two at Lyn

Conflicting stories here. Ring the CAA they will tell you for sure

Try here. The rest of the site will give you a few answers but I am pretty sure tha initial Class 1 can only be done at Gatwick. A word of warning if you have to go there. You book a date and they warn you that you are subject to a penalty if you have to cancel it. Then you get all the paperwork through and it tells you that you MAY need a particular type of eye test which will mean that you can't drive afterwards. So make sure that the date you pick is one where you would be able to get home after if you need this test!

RAF docs can give an initial class 1 issue to serving pilots. I know 'cos that's how I got mine not so long ago!

Not all docs can do them though. Have you tried asking at, perhaps, the Med Centre

There's also a Medical Centre at Heathrow, base of present (not new) control tower opposite Terminal 2. The examiners here are all fully CAA approved, although it's actually operated by NATS.
The one at Gatwick by the way is at Aviation House, to the south of the airport.

You can definately get an initial class one done by docs in the RAF. I had mine done at lossie by the civi UMO there in september, costs about £60 for the medical and then the fee that the CAA charges, can't remember how much though. Hope this helps.
You also need to book an eye exam with a civi optician when you get your initial done.:ok:

Military AMEs can do revalidation/renewal Class 1 medicals for serving regular/reserve aircrew, ATCOs and civilian aircrew whose primary employment is with MOD. Initial Class 1 medicals can be done for serving military aircrew, but the paperwork has to be forwarded on to the CAA who then issue the certificate direct. Other personnel have to go down to Aviation House for initial class 1s.

We can do Class 2 medicals for serving regular and reserve personnel.

Some military AMEs are "stamp holders" and can actually issue the medical certificates (apart from initial Class 1s). Non stamp holders do the medical examination and then forward the paperwork to the CAA who will then issue the certificates.

Hope that helps, time to get back to morning surgery! Please do PM me if any more specific queries.
