Some historical help please.

Not sure if anyone could help but my question is

In WW2 would the Royal Observer Corps have come under the organisation of the Army or the RAF?

My reason for asking is I am researching my Great Grandfather who was in the Royal Garrison Artillery in WW1 but was in the ROC in WW2, so i need to see about getting his records released but not sure who i need to speak to.

Many thanks

Sid.

BEagle's & ZH875's links are v. interesting but I was under the impression that the Observers at the begining of WW2 were attestedand enrolled as Special Constables (there are several photos of them wearing 'duty' armbands). If that is the case, then they would have come under the Home Office (or equivalent).

Any info. would be gratefully received.:O

The transfer of the Observer Corps from the Home Office to the RAF took place on January 1st, 1929.
