Toll of the widow maker
|
I thought the F104 was called the widowmaker. The one with tiny wings and razor sharp leading edges.
|
The term has also been applied to the AK-47 and derivatives.

"An investigation has found the Lynx, about 60 of which are based at RNAS Yeovilton, has more tail rotor failures than any other military helicopter operated by the MoD."
Which is a bit like saying the Ford Focus is involved in more major road accidents than rolls royce silver ghosts. Doesn't say anything does it. |
ITV Westcountry Special Report tonight at 7.30 To Get Other ITV Regions via Your Digibox Press 'SERVICES" then press " SYSTEM SETUP'(4) then press 'ADD CHANNELS" (4). Where 'FREQUENCY" is highlighted (in yellow): Type in: 10906 (using remote control) Then cursor down with green button until you highlight: POLARISATION and change to read 'V'. Now go to 'MBAUD' and choose '22' Now go to 'FEC' and choose '5/6' Now highlight 'FIND CHANNELS' and press 'SELECT' When the channels are shown, TICK (select) the ones that you want. Now press 'BACKUP' and select 'OTHER CHANNELS' to present a range of ITV Regions to select from. Next, repeat the above procedure using the parameters 10832 - H - 22 - 5/6 10891 - H - 22 - 5/6 To return to 'Normal' SKY channels, multi- press backup until picture re-appears... Note: You will NOT be able to select ALL these other channels from the normal 'All Channels" menu, so you may have to keep accessing these new regions by using 'Other Channels" (press SERVICE and 6). These days I think you'll find ITV Westcountry on 10.832 H 22.0 5/6, NOT 10.906 V!
SES keep moving them around; the easiest source of up-to-date information is www.wildsat.com under Astra 28.2 East. But Gus Honeybun isn't on ITV Westcountry (or Westward TV as it once was) anymore! |
Thanks Beagle,
I guess you didn't see the bit that said; Next, repeat the above procedure using the parameters 10832 - H - 22 - 5/6 10891 - H - 22 - 5/6 http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/itvsouthwes...svideo1987.jpg :) SS |
Mmm, a few spine shivers, but pretty much as some of us thought beforehand in;
'Lynx Down on SPTA' - http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...ht=widow+maker 'Lynx reliability' - http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...ht=widow+maker Interesting to see a lot of the film footage, the N.Ireland Lynx landing on the beach in particular. :uhoh: SS |
A good programme, I thought. But the Lynx is getting well towards (if not past) its use-by date. Like most of the UK military a/c which aren't 'fast jets'.....
(I see your bunny hops and raise you some ear waggling. To think that both Angela Rippon and Fern Britton started their TV careers with their hands up Gus Honeybun's ar$e!) |
Interestingly, the lawyer mentioned that 'a lot of those she talked to about the Lynx, referred to it as the 'Widow Maker''.
Methinks she is a PPRuNe trawler. Mmmmmm, Fern Britton.http://www.geocities.com/pprunessilsoesid/fern.jpg (I'll further raise your ear wags and raise the stakes with 5 winks!) Funnily enough,I literally bumped into Fern twice the other week. Firstly she tried to take me out on the roundabout in Wadebridge and a couple of days later I nearly walked into her in Padstow. And the Sun shone for the rest of the week, well apart from the Saturday!! |
That's a particularly charitable photo of Fern Britton! Around 1970, I would guess?
|
The real Fern Britton
Good grief, she's older than I am! occasionally presented on the sofa with Frank Bough |
Aaah, Fern Britton.
I remember her oft repeated utterance after a Hawk sortie with one of the TWU sqn cdrs at Chivenor (c. 1980) as she sat on the steps - "If you've got to do it, do it with Neil" Wasn't long before the lapel badges were being sported, generally by those not on Neil's sqn. At that time she was, how can I put this without seeming ungracious, well, cuddly would cover it. :p |
I have the 'Widowmaker' programme as a 256 Mb mpeg4 file if it's any use to anyone who may have missed it. :8
When fern gets the giggles on the sofa with Phil, doesn't it just set you up for a good day? :D SS |
SS,
I'd appreciate a look at it, any ideas on how to get it to me, thanks, HEDP |
Would MSM work?
WinMX? |
Continuing with the thread drift towards a Fern Britton "Isn't she cuddly" theme, the more mature PPRuNers may appreciate this link ;) :D
|
And the not so mature ones can see her while doing the Ryvita advert!!! ;)
http://img.dailymail.co.uk/img/galle...nL_200x350.jpg Too much time at Rick Steins !! Anyway, if you'd like to WinMX for Lynx Widow Maker the file should be there. :ok: :8 SS |
FAA Widow-Maker
Meanwhile and digging further back than Fern, is there anyone out there, especially observers, who might comment on the merits of the Blackburn NA39/Bucc Mk1 with pre RR engines or the Vixen Mk1 as the true FAA widow-makers for their performance at sea?
