Ray Holmes
Not seen this anywhere on Pprune yet, so - Sgt Ray Holmes, famed for ramming a Do 17 during the Battle of Britain (after he'd expended all his ammunition) has died aged 90. Full story here. The RAF web page carried a story a couple of months ago about how he'd been presented with a metal Hurricane crafted from the remains of his aircraft's engine (dug up live on Telly a while ago).
Thought I'd put this here rather than history and nostalgia, given the background. Another of the 'Few' who leaves us. May he enjoy unlimited visibility and soft landings! |
Here, here, well said Archimedes.

There's a bigger thread on Flight deck forum- rumours and news page.
