The end of an era.

The Gazelle AH1 is going into retirement after 20 years...

To mark this sad occasion, 847 Naval Air Squadron will be holding a "wake" on Friday 18 March 2005. The function is open to anyone who has served with 847 NAS or 3 BAS and promises to be a "hoofing" day!

I just wondered why this wake was being restricted only to guys who had served on 847 and BAS. It would just seem sensible to me that seeing as the RN is de-commissioning an aircraft then all people in the RN who flew the Gazelle should have the opportunity to attend the wake.

No but only inviting 847 and 3 BAS suggests that those 2 units were the only 2 Naval units to operate the gazelle...what about the rest.

I do jog most days but not that far. Why would I need to go 10 miles? and why has the month only got 25 days in it?

I only asked a question regarding the Royal Navy and their history of flying the Gazelle which was not limited to 847 or 3 BAS. So why does that make you feel that you should abuse me like that?

To be more precise ..the Gazelle AH1 in Royal Marines service will retire..AH1 in Army service will probably retire about 2017:uhoh:

Royal Marines, whether they like it or not are part of the RN, and 847 is a NAS;)

I joined the Royal Marines in 1955, and have always been happy that we are part of the Navy. You seem to think otherwise, but I'm sure most Booties feel the same way. We enjoy keeping you in order, and the food is much better at sea. I must admit to being seriously p****d off when 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron Royal Marines became 847 NAS, with a squadron crest that has nothing 'Royal Marines' about it. There again, I felt the same way when a Commando Unit changed from having 5 Troops to 3 Companies, and the rank of QMS became WOII, and .........

However, I've never seen so much back biting over the simple fact that the Royal Marines are organising a Squadron reunion to mark the occasion of losing their 8 Gazelles, without replacement, and have invited anyone who served in 847 NAS, or what was the 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron, to join them. That way we will recognise old oppos, and not spend the time trying to guess, 'Who, is that old f**t'. :ok: (OOps sorry, that's a mirror Royal! ;) )

I hope to see you there...... if you qualify.
