Defence Instructional Techniques Course
 

Just been informed that anyone going on the become an instructor for specialised courses ( IOT, SCSR etc) will need to first complete the DITC. Is anyone else being DITC around and if so what is the course format and the aim.

Course aim is to give you a basic understanding of instructional techniques so that you can stand in front of a group and give effective instruction.

Even people who used to teach in schools before joining up have to do the course (.... more qualified than the instructors..???) if they are going onto Instructional duties

As for course format - sorry haven't done it. Managed to body sweve each time it was mentioned

Its nothing hard..you just recieve some instruction on how to instruct, format of a lesson etc.
Then you give a 20 min factual lesson and a 30 min skills lesson where you have to teach the fellow students a new skill. (I taught knots...nice and simple). Remember KISS (Keep it simple stupid) and you can't fail to impress.

It would appear to be the current name for what used to be called the GIT course. One of the best courses I did and alleged to teach you more about classroom technique than a civy teacher gets from a two year training. Also useful on a CV. A little work beforehand on preparing the stand up bit can pay dividends. Recommended.

285 GIT Course Upwood - best value non-flying course I attended, including staff college. Put me in good shape for all manner of public stand-ups for many years - and the WaFF attendee was also good value.

We had an ALM on the AIC who gave a talk on helicopter swashplates. Talk about insomnia inducing. Then came the Q&A session at the end.

One of our number was able to answer every question proving what a good instructor the ALM was. Afterwards, when the FJ Nav was congratulated he confessed to having worked for W*stl*nds.

Shades of Bob Monkhouse in "I'm alright Jack" when told to strip and reassemble a Bren gun.

On my GIT course, many moons ago, something like 9 out of 12 attendees were either Buccaneer pilots or F4 navs made redundant by Jaguar and destined for the Nav School.

It was difficult to hold their attention when discussing the Shackleton compass system, but they were most amused by the sole truckie.

A small, fat, mouthy F4 nav called, I think, Chunky, was doing a sea survival lesson. Ignoring all question technique, he simply pinned this Brittannia guy and asked him for the first thing that should be done after boarding the dinghy.

His response?

'Call the roll'.

.....cue the wag at the back:

"yeah, cheese and tomato, ham and pickle, tuna and mayo.."

An infamous character by the name of JVOC was the only FC ever to fail the GIT Course which, at the time, was staffed by the world's most anally retentive instructors. JVOC was not a volunteer for the course and blotted his copy book immediately in 2 ways. Firstly, he got into a heated debate with a lady of a certain age in the Officers' Mess Bridge Club - it turned out to be the Stn Cdr's wife. However, the final straw was when he deliberately broke the golden rule regarding 'yes/no' questions......JVOC decided to do his 10 minute lesson on the speechless code.
