Wokka Under Wires
Very impressive and a great change from boring Boeings @ FL nosebleed. More please.:ok: :)
(One day I'll have me camera ready:( ) |
Even more fun at night on goggles all white light extinguished.
B100dy scary when you lift the goggles and cannot see sh1t though: |
Oh, I think that's precisely what I would see, Yozzer, old boy.
|
Oh, I think that's precisely what I would see, Couple of folk talking about it in the local pub last night, seemed impressed also. Did it yonks ago, (Karl D. was a co-pilot, yeh, that long ago) with 7Sqn, great fun. |
Am I missing something here as there doesn't appear to be a pic or a link...?
|
Detgnome,
No link, I was referring to a Chinook doing NoE around here last week, under HT lines. It's SOP I believe. One day I'll get a pic, hopefully. |
It's no more than hover taxiing, you just go under something....
Detgnome, send me a PM. |
In my time it needed a clearance of 6 metres above, 3 metres lateral and 2 metres below, to prevent arcing from HT cables passing through the aircraft .
Many years ago, as a young thruster of an SH pilot, I did it once as per the SOP, at the slow hover taxy. Then, on the way back, I admit to my shame, I flew under the wires the opposite way at 140 kts. Scared the crewman a bit. In fact he threatened to deck me if I ever did that again. :E |
Sandchopper,
When I had it demoed to me it was indeed a fastish hover taxi, however, this guy was going max chat. |
"I flew under the wires the opposite way at 140 kts"
Gutsy move MAV: "Scared the crewman a bit. In fact he threatened to deck me if I ever did that again" I would have, and then gone to the Stn cdr in person to explain why! Its time you people learnt that there is more then your ego on the aeroplane. |
Yozzer:
I think you missed the bit in ST's post where he says "Many years ago, as a young thruster of an SH pilot". I think he's moved on since then. |
Done it with the crewman walking on the ground guiding me over the intercom on the long lead. No Probs
|
It's also good fun on NVG while in the middle of a blizzard in southern Germany.
The only snag was choosing to do it next to the autobahn and watching the cars pile into eachother while they watched us and not the road! :( Still, that was a few years ago........ |
Yozzer,
Thanks for your comments, I'll bear them in mind in future, although it was almost 25 years ago now. If you had read and understood the tone of my post I immediately knew it wasn't a good thing to do, even before the crewman discussed it with me, although there was actually plenty of room. Having said that, had the IGB ever actually been crossed from east to west, NO pilot in his right mind would have been slowing down to a slow hover taxy as per the "set piece" taught on the OCU, let me assure you.... :p p.s. It wasn't an aeroplane. |
