Did the much heraled recce flight along the length argentine coast actually happen...Sharkey Ward seems pretty adamant that the Nimrod never got closer than 500 miles. ... Hopefully someone can shed more light on this?
Yes it did happen, and a few days earlier in May 1982 than 'Falklands - The Air War' would have us believe. (Mind you, the ink in my log book is starting to fade, but I think I have the dates correct!)

'The Air War' is essentially correct in the sortie profile, and I am quite happy to admit that mistakes were made in identification - both on the sortie(s) I flew and on others, although the primary purpose of those types of missions - to confirm that the Argentine Navy combatants had remained within terrotorial waters - were essentially a case of 'DCO'.

It's a great shame that 'Sharkey' was not on duty the day we flew in formation with the Argie B707 for several miles. Had he been I am sure we would have had a far greater response to our sighting reports broadcast on the specified comms channels but [apparently] unheard by the 'dark blue' operating less than 150 miles from us at the time.

Let's face it, all shades of uniform took part in Op Corporate and associated missions. It was probably the first 'purple' operation of its size and complexity in recent times. Mistakes were made all round, at all levels: none of us are perfect. Or so MOST participants would have you believe. ;)
