Forces Websites

Though it pains me to say it, I think the RN's website is by far the best of the three armed forces official websites. It is easy to navigate, informative (without being boring), intelligent and even witty in places. The Army website is, well, very Army and the less said about the RAF website, the better (dull ain't the word).

I was driving between Bury St. Edmunds and Thetford recently and drove through RAF Barnham (at least that's what the signs said). I've never heard of the place so, in a moment of idle curiosity, I went to the RAF web site to see what the place was (looked like some sort of stores depot). After half an hour or so I was still none the wiser since I couldn't find it anywhere (not on any of the base lists etc. and the idle moment turned into a 'the damn place must be SOMEWHERE' hunt). This led me to consider a couple of possibilities:-

1. It's a Top Secret, hush-hush site only identified on a need-to-know basis (with everyone driving on the A143 needing to know).
:hmm:

2. The RAF have totally forgotten the existence of the place and it's manned by a Flight Lieutenant and three Airmen enjoying a quiet life and taking it in turns to guard the gate or go to the local pub.

If it's option 1 then I suppose it's my turn to watch out for the black Omega's. :ooh:

RAF Barnham was sold to civil interests in 1965 and has been a light industrial site ever since. Before that it was used as a bomb store.

RAF Barnham

In addition to the old nuclear storage facility at RAF Barnham, mentioned in the above link (which is actually rather difficult to find from the main road), the site that is visible from the Bury St Edmunds – Thetford road is in fact an accommodation site consisting of Barrack Blocks, Mess and NAAFI. There are also some service houses in Barnham village.
Both facilities are parented and manned by staff from nearby RAF Honington.

Rocks use it for assessing fitness/aptitude of potential recruits.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. Did like the thought of the 'lost base' though - pity about reality..

Must go answer the door. There's a bloke wearing dark glasses asking for me.
