Whose contrails?

Great picture, but whose contrails do you reckon those are on the left?

Big friendly planes with spinning saucers or trailing hoses I would guess.

Or aliens. You be the judge!

Isn't the bit with those circles where the special ops guys have been quietly doing their bit recently?

Looks more like a B52 pilot trying to do an elaborate NO in sky writing like on the Focus advert.

The question was mostly rhetorical - but i guessed it wasn't MiGs!!

Turn radius looks too tight for B52 or Tornado, so my money is on spinning dish or hoses, too.

Worth looking at some of the other sat images on:

Which reminds me.

Many eons ago I was working in the Yorkshire Dales. Twas a bright sunny day (freak weather for the Pennines) which was just begging for a bored BA crew trainer out of EGCC to con trail a massive set of meat & two veg in the sky, which he did. Very impressive, visible for miles and stayed for hours. Anyone seen/done/photo'd similer???

Contrail Ad

Yes, on Dec 31 2002 you could see some contrail advertising (if I remember it correctly it was an advertisment for a certain battery) over the Birsbane sky.

Does anybody know what kind of aircraft was used?

Seen it here in Spain - some very neat sky writing for a certain brand of whisky - white smoke, small piston powered job (probably disel into the exhaust manifold for the smoke) but no idea on aircraft type. All non-gas turbine powered aeroplanes are classed as "small" or "toy" in my book!

In the original sat-image, just wondering if the NW-SE and back straight tracks might be those of J-STARS having a good side-look at the combat area with it's kit....

Very interesting that this image has now disappeared from the NOAA archive. It must have been a UFO.
