RAF Tri Stars

Are there any L1011 crews on here?

I have a question regarding the cockpit on the -500!

Also, do you still use the BA sim at Cranebank? (or am I way behind the times!??)

Cheers

What's your question?

Nope, we've got our own sim nowadays. Although I never used the one at Cranebank, I get the impression you were slotted in for some pretty antisocial times down there. At least with Brize, you're not in there during the small hours.

I have been asked to take some pictures of the cockpit of a -500 for an Austrian Company for a MS Flight Sim. It will be photo-realistic so I need about 45 mins in the cockpit. Maybe also get some sounds of warnings...."Pull Up" etc

They want some pictures for the cover of the box also, and it could be good PR for the RAF. We can get some free copies to the Sqn/Station to give away or as Xmas draw prizes!!!!!!

Mail me if you or anyone can help! I am in the RAuxAF so have a 1250 still.

Thanks

Alan

Nothing to do with the original post but an opportunity to seek an answer to the following: is the L1011 in RAF service officially spelt TriStar or Tristar.

I thought the civilian version was the former and certainly the crew patches spell it this way. The RAF website spells it Tristar.

Anyone put me out of my misery?

As far as photos of the flight-deck, you may be contravening the official secrets act if you start snapping away. Speak to 216 Sqn Ops at Brize Norton-they'll be your best bet.

The preferred reference to the Mighty TriMotor is 'TriStar' or
L-1011. Haven't got any official Pubs to hand, by my best guess that it's either in block capitals or Tristar.
However, it doesn't matter one iota!

contraveening the offical secrets act for taking a photo of an airliner cockpit? as the tristar is a former civil airliner i doubt v much if theres anything in the cockpit that would be of much use to a spy. ever watch dr strangelove? all the comms kit in that film was in use by the v force, did kubrick end up in the old bailey?

Canberra -

You're quite right. the 3* is a FORMER airliner:

K1/KC1 are unlikely to get photo'd due OSA.
If you can find a spare C2 (pure pax variant) on the ground you may get a chance, however I'm just pointing out to AlanM that the powers that be may get a little stuffy on this one. Don't know what the official line is, but my best guess is that now is not the best time to go reproducing photos of military flight decks, from a security point of view.

Don't shoot the messenger...

I agree with Farfrompuken that the C2 would be your best bet, but 216 Sqn is not the place to ask. You're best going directly to MoD Corporate Comms (MODPR in old money) and hit them with the idea - after all, they approved the Nimrod software and another one (Canberra, I think). They are clued on to the fact that many of the people that buy flight sims are teenagers that want to fly the real thing soon.

Guys,

Thanks for the comments. I have just drafted a letter to OC 216, should I not send it to him?

As regards the security concerns: I agree that this is potentially a "sensitive" area. However, I am looking for any UK L1011-500's and the RAF have the monopoly here!!

Would the sim at BZN be good enough to be used do you think, as that could be an easier approach. (That is also why I am asking about the BA one)

Finally, you only have to go to airliners.net and click search for L1011 and Flight Deck pictures to see there are many on here. I just think that it would be good for this international product to be sold with an RAF aircraft on the cover and in the program itself! (being made by an Austrian company)

Here are two of 63 pics of L1011's Flight decks on airliners.net (spot the difference!!)

Interesting to note that 2 of the 3 artificial horizons on the RAF piccie (mentioned above) are at different angles to the other. Probably not too surprising though since it appears that the pic was taken aboard ZE706. It was nicknamed 'Damian' by some personnel when I was in MPA in '94 & 96. It always seemed to be the one going U/S.

ah happy days.....

Well they have got a rather large JTIDS display screen in them now just to the right handside of the Co-pilot. Apart from that very little difference apart from on the Eng console.

Be interested in any feed back from guys who have been on that fantasy island lately as to how it's working.

DuckDodgers,

I think that particular installation would be the cause of all the OSA concerns.
Discussions ref it's perfomance would certainly be innappropriate on this forum.

Cool

Note the "handy" accelerometer (sp?) on the coaming of the captain's window....right in the wrong place for those tricky landings. And why did we need it anyway?...."no, no, no bloggs. It's snap to 1.2g and sqeeeeze to 1.25"

As for the sim, the one at Cranebank (many hours and, as I recall not a single unsociable one) has long departed. I believe there may be one at Bournemouth, but not sure if it's a -500.

I believe there is a company near Southampton that offers MCC courses on a Tristar simulator. They maybe a better bet tham running the risk of spending time in prison at HM's pleasure for snapping a light blue Tristar cockpit. The company concerned advertises regularly in the UK editioh Flight International, so it shoudn't be to hard to track them down.

European Aviation (or whatever they may be called now) at EGHH had at least one Tristar sim, possibly two which I think may have been ex-BA. This was a couple of years ago so may not be accurate now but worth a try.
