I watched today's broadcast on Sky TV News because that was what my TV was set to from last night. Generally my opinion of
Press and TV is that they are Pond Life and Oxygen Burglars, However I was most impressed by the broadcast. Informative,
respectful and very professional . Well done Sky. A great tribute to a great man.

Moving, quietly magnificent and blessed by the weather. A touching and suitable send-off to a great man. RIP, calm waters and fair winds on your journey, Sir.

We were on a chat channel with an American friend at the time ... she said “You guys do this sort of thing so well.” Agreed ... Op FORTH BRIDGE was magnificently executed. BZ to all who planned and participated.

On the No Flypast question, I'm inclined to agree with you, Video Mixdown, when you say
Because the service was what HRH wanted
But I have to ask - do you know that he didn't want a flypast, or is that speculation?

He was, after all, a distinguished pilot, and, by all accounts, a great aviation person. So it seems a bit odd, at such an extraordinary public occasion, to have no airborne RAF representation. That is not, of course, to denigrate the excellence of the Queen's Colour Squadron and the Central Band of the RAF.

It's my understanding that he was closely involved in planning the whole thing. If he'd wanted a fly-past there would have been one.

What an odd presentation of who attended by the BBC

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56765468

It lists them as HM the Queen, Charles, Camilla, Anne, Timothy Laurence, Andrew, Edward....etc all the way down the listing then when we get to Beatrice and Eugenia, they are listed as Princesses.. but all those before are without titles bar the Queen.

They don't have titles in their own right hence they're officially Princess Beatrice/Eugenie of York and Princess Alexandra.

The royals with their own titles are officially styled
Charles, Prince of Wales
Anne, Princess Royal
and so forth.

Prince Charles, Princess Anne etc are common but incorrect usage by the media. They were only called that when young/before marriage and didn't have titles of their own.

More on the RN/RM role here.

Only posted for this quote:

Leading the Royal Marines Buglers is Sergeant Jamie Ritchie from Dundee, who performed on several occasions for the Duke in the latter’s capacity as Captain General Royal Marines and also presented the 31-year-old with his medal for service in Afghanistan.

Even though he was a man of few words, the great thing about Prince Philip is how relatable he made you feel. He made you feel calm and welcome in his presence,” he said.

Managed to find a channel (Red Button) free from commentary and watched the form up/progression to the castle - excellent, no 'talking heads' ... has the BBC been listening to us?

Thank you for the explanation, that makes sense now.

While not military related but to add to the comments about the Duke of Edinburgh's interest in technology. He was apparently responsible for the building of the Auster Agricola topdressing aircraft.

The story goes that after Queen Elizabeth and he visited New Zealand in the late 1950's and had seen Tiger Moths being used as topdressing aircraft Prince Philip went to Auster and asked/told them to build a purpose built topdressing aircraft for use in the Antipodes.
