I remember a mine clearance presentation that described the petal mine. We were told that they were developed by the Russians for use in Afghanistan and made of brightly coloured plastic and were very light weight.
The design was for them to be thrown from helicopter doors over villages.
The kids would see them and play with them with the resulting limb and torso injuries.
We were horrified, more so when they were sown into cuddly toys with delay timers and tilt switches.

There was a quick realisation that the Russians didn't play by the same rule book as we did.

Interesting, ORAC. of course Nagorno Karabakh is where it all kicked off for the Soviet Union in February 1988.

Somewhere in my distant brain I remember 10 mins to arm themselves, so they didn't go bang on landing, we had an inject on one exercise that the HAS entrance was blocked with the things and this Chief appeared with the equivalent of a BR platform sweeper and swept them all up in under 10

SM: "made of brightly coloured plastic and were very light weight."

Yep, remember them from exercises in Germany - they were called 'green frogs'.

And they’ve hit at least 50 ammo dumps and trains to date….

Ukraine's recent HIMARS attack on a Russian ammunition train seems to have been an unusually high-casualty event – reportedly 80 Russians killed and another 200 wounded.

Back when the JP233 was in vogue, I recall a lecture about how difficult it would have been for runways to be repaired after an attack due to the 'minelets' scattered from the weapon. These would have blown holes in any bulldozer blades...

"So what about using a water jet from an old jet engine on an old tank - as was used to put out oil fires after GW1?", I asked the lecturer.

No reply - just a 'Paddington bear stare'!

At least the ratio of killed to wounded fits historical norms for "combat"-type casualties. Thus eminently believable.

When I was a boy that age, I'd have loved to drive around in a little machine like that.

To be honest I see nothing wrong with this. The Army were always at events when I was a kid letting you handle weapons, climb in vehicles.
The roundabouts at fairgrounds always had a few tanks to sit in and there were remote control ones you could drive for a few pennies.
Kids being kids.

"Civilians film activity off of Sevastopol. Smoke screens are deployed from a Russian ship and shelling is heard. Supposedly they spotted a possible incoming rocket attack."

Does this stand up to scrutiny?

Speculation this is the same vessel - usual caveats apply.
